Nairobi to Old Moses (Judmaier Camp, 3, 340 m) via Sirimon Gate

Your Mount Kenya adventure begins with a morning pick-up in Nairobi, where our driver will welcome you and provide a brief introduction to the journey ahead. Enjoy a scenic 3.5–4 hour drive through Kenya’s Central Highlands toward Nanyuki, with the dramatic silhouette of Mount Kenya gradually emerging on the horizon. Upon arrival in Nanyuki, you will meet your mountain crew, complete final gear checks, and enjoy a light lunch before continuing to Sirimon Gate (2,650 m). After completing park formalities, your hike begins along a well-maintained trail ascending gradually through the enchanting montane forest.

The trail winds through a landscape rich in birdlife and indigenous vegetation before transitioning into the open heather moorlands. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife such as bushbuck, black-and-white colobus monkeys etc in the higher forest zones. Old Moses – Mackinder Valley – Shipton Camp (4, 200 m)

After breakfast, prepare for the longest trekking day of the route as you venture deeper into Mount Kenya’s alpine wilderness. The trail gradually climbs across the moorlands, passing unique high-altitude vegetation before crossing the Ontulili River.

Continuing onward, you will traverse the scenic slopes overlooking the dramatic Liki North Valley before joining the main trail into the Mackinder Valley. This section offers some of the most impressive scenery of the trek, with magnificent views of Mount Kenya’s legendary peaks—Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana—towering above the landscape.

The route is surrounded by giant groundsels, lobelias, and other remarkable alpine plants that make this ecosystem unlike anywhere else in East Africa.

After 6–7 hours, you will reach Shipton Camp (4,200 m). You will have lunch in the camp spectacularly positioned beneath the rugged cliffs of Mount Kenya’s main peaks. Enjoy dinner and a well-earned rest as you prepare for the summit attempt ahead.

Your summit day begins early at around 2:30–3:00 am with a hot drink and a light snack before setting off under the stars. With headlamps illuminating the trail, you will make the challenging ascent across steep scree and rocky terrain toward Point Lenana, the highest trekking peak on Mount Kenya.

Reaching the summit at 4,985 m in time for sunrise offers an unforgettable experience. As the first light touches the mountain peaks, enjoy breathtaking views of Batian and Nelion, with the possibility of seeing Mount Kilimanjaro and the Aberdare Range on the distant horizon.

After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, descend carefully back to Shipton Camp for a hearty breakfast. Refreshed, continue your descent through the spectacular Mackinder Valley, retracing your route toward Old Moses Camp.
