Day 1

Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

After breakfast at your hotel in Kigali, you'll meet your guide and start the day at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a moving site that honors the victims of the 1994 genocide. From there it's a drive northwest through Rwanda's green hills toward Volcanoes National Park, passing market towns and terraced farmland along the way. You'll arrive in the afternoon and check into The Garden Place Hotel or similar budget accommodation for the night.

Day 2

You'll head out early for the transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters for your safety briefing, then set off on your guided golden monkey trek in Volcanoes National Park, where you'll spend an hour with these lively, rare primates. Afterward, stop by the Gorilla Guardian Village for a taste of local culture, dance, music, and crafts, then visit the Gorilla Museum to learn about the conservation history behind the mountain gorillas. From there you'll cross the border into Uganda and continue to your lodge near Bwindi or Mgahinga. Overnight at Travelers Rest Hotel or similar.

Early breakfast, then it's off to the ranger station for your pre-trek briefing before heading into the forest with expert trackers in search of a habituated gorilla family. You'll spend an hour in their presence, watching them from a safe 10 meter distance. Once that's done, you'll drive to Lake Bunyonyi, one of Uganda's most scenic lakes, where you can relax and take in the views and birdlife. Overnight at Lake Bunyonyi Overland Camp or similar.
