Day 2
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
After breakfast, transfer to Marangu Gate (1,860m) to complete park registration. The trail begins through lush montane rainforest, home to colobus and blue monkeys, with a good chance of hearing (or spotting) turacos overhead. The path is gentle and well-graded, climbing steadily to Mandara Hut, where you'll settle into your first night on the mountain.
Day 3
Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut
Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut
The trail climbs out of the rainforest and into open moorland, with heather and giant lobelias replacing the forest canopy. On clear days, this stretch offers your first real views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The gradual ascent helps with acclimatization as you make your way to Horombo Hut, a large camp with sweeping views back down the mountain.
Day 4
Horombo Hut- Kibo Hut
Horombo Hut- Kibo Hut
The day's hike crosses "The Saddle," a stark, high-altitude desert plateau stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo. Vegetation thins out almost entirely as the air grows noticeably thinner. Arrival at Kibo Hut comes mid-afternoon, leaving time for an early dinner and rest before the overnight summit push.

Uhuru Peak
Uhuru Peak
Summit night begins around midnight, climbing steadily by headlamp through scree towards Gillman's Point on the crater rim. From there, the trail continues around the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. After time to take in the views and glaciers, the descent retraces the route back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continues down to Horombo Hut for the night.
