Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut (Rainforest Trek)

Your driver picks you up from your hotel in the morning for a scenic drive to the historic Marangu Gate. After brief park registration, you hit the trail with your guide team. The path immediately plunges into a vibrant, emerald-green montane rainforest.

You will walk beneath massive, moss-draped trees while listening to the calls of exotic birds. Keep an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys jumping through the canopy. In the late afternoon, you arrive at Mandara Hut, a collection of wooden A-frame cabins. Enjoy a hot tea and a freshly prepared dinner from your private chef.

Mandara to Horombo Hut (Alpine Moorland)

You will leave the dense rainforest behind this morning as the trail thins out into the dramatic heather and moorland zone. The air gets noticeably crisper and thinner, so your guide will remind you to walk "Pole Pole" (slowly, slowly).

The landscape opens up into sweeping hills dotted with prehistoric giant lobelias and groundsels. On a clear day, you will get your first majestic views of the jagged Mawenzi peak and the snow-capped Kibo summit ahead. You will reach Horombo Hut by mid-afternoon, which resembles a bustling mountain village. Rest your legs, enjoy a hearty multi-course dinner, and sleep under a star-filled alpine sky.

Triumphant Descent to Marangu Gate

Wake up early to catch a breathtaking sunrise over a sea of clouds below the mountain. After a filling breakfast, you begin your final, long descent. Because you are heading down, your breathing will feel much easier.

You will retrace your steps through the alpine moorland and back into the cool, oxygen-rich rainforest. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you will sign the official register, and your guide will present you with a commemorative trekking certificate. Your driver will then transport you back to your hotel for a long-awaited hot shower.
