Arrive in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s vibrant capital and the starting point of your photographic expedition. Meet your professional local guide and transfer to your hotel for check-in and a briefing about the journey ahead. Depending on your arrival time, there may be an opportunity for a short orientation around the city or time to rest and prepare your photography equipment. The evening is free to relax and prepare for the early journey toward southwestern Ethiopia on the following day.

Day 2

Flight to Jimma and Journey to Kibish

Flight to Jimma and Journey to Kibish

After breakfast, take a domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Jimma, the gateway to southwestern Ethiopia. From Jimma, continue by 4x4 through the beautiful landscapes toward Mizan Tefri and the remote Kibish area. Along the way, experience the changing scenery of southwestern Ethiopia and, time permitting, visit the Bebeka coffee-growing area. Continue toward Kibish, where you will settle into a simple campsite and prepare for the following days of photography among the Suri community. This is a long but rewarding travel day into one of Ethiopia’s most remote regions.

Day 3

Suri Village Photographic Experience

Suri Village Photographic Experience

Spend the day exploring the remote Kibish area and meeting members of the Suri community, one of the most distinctive cultural groups of southwestern Ethiopia. This day is dedicated to photography and cultural observation, with opportunities to capture traditional village life, pastoral activities, local customs, traditional body decoration and the surrounding landscapes. Your experienced local guide will help facilitate respectful interactions with the community while allowing time for photography at a relaxed pace. Return to the campsite in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4

Journey to Kangate and Nyangatom Territory

Journey to Kangate and Nyangatom Territory

After breakfast, leave the Kibish area and travel by 4x4 toward Kangate, continuing deeper into the remote landscapes of southwestern Ethiopia. The journey offers opportunities to photograph dramatic scenery, traditional settlements and everyday life along the route. Arrive in Kangate and settle into the campsite. In the afternoon, begin your introduction to the Nyangatom community and their traditional way of life, with opportunities for respectful cultural photography. Overnight at the campsite in Kangate.

Day 5

Nyangatom Cultural Photography Experience

Nyangatom Cultural Photography Experience

Spend a full day in the Kangate area meeting the Nyangatom community and experiencing their traditional way of life. The day is focused on authentic cultural photography, including village life, traditional clothing, pastoral activities, local customs and the surrounding landscape. With the support of your experienced local guide, you will have time to observe and photograph daily activities respectfully and naturally. The remote setting provides excellent opportunities to capture the distinctive culture and landscapes of the Omo Valley. Return to the campsite in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 6

Karo Village and Omo River Photography

After breakfast, continue by 4x4 toward the Karo area along the Omo River. The journey offers spectacular opportunities to photograph the remote landscapes and traditional settlements of the Omo Valley. Spend time with the Karo community, known for distinctive body painting, traditional hairstyles and cultural traditions. The day is dedicated to respectful observation and photography of village life and the surrounding river landscape. In the evening, settle into the Karo campsite, enjoy dinner and prepare for the final stage of the expedition toward the Hamar area.

Day 7

Hamar Cultural Photography Experience

Hamar Cultural Photography Experience

Spend the day around Turmi experiencing the traditional lifestyle and culture of the Hamar people. This is the final major photographic experience of the Western Omo Valley expedition, with opportunities to photograph village life, pastoral activities, traditional clothing, hairstyles, body decoration and the surrounding landscapes. If a traditional ceremony or cultural event is naturally taking place, your guide will help facilitate respectful observation and photography. Enjoy the relaxed pace of the day before returning to Turmi for dinner and overnight at Buska Lodge, preparing for the return journey to Addis Ababa on the following day.

Continue to Jinka for your scheduled domestic flight to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, transfer to the airport or your hotel, depending on your onward travel plans. Your Western Omo Valley Photography Expedition concludes with unforgettable memories of the Suri, Nyangatom, Karo and Hamar cultures, people and landscapes.
