Your Sands of the Okavango safari begins in Maun, where you will be collected in the morning by your Leon Safaris guide. From here, the journey heads north towards Mababe, gradually leaving town behind and entering the open wilderness of northern Botswana.
The drive to camp is part of the experience, passing through changing landscapes and offering the first chance to settle into the rhythm of safari. A packed lunch will be enjoyed along the way at a suitable stop before continuing deeper into the bush.
You will arrive at your mobile camp in Mababe in the late afternoon or early evening, where the camp team will be ready to welcome you. After settling into your tent, enjoy some time to relax and take in your surroundings before gathering for dinner under the Botswana sky. Your first evening in camp is a chance to slow down, listen to the sounds of the wilderness and prepare for the days of safari ahead.

Day 2
Mababe
Mababe
Wake to the sounds of the bush before heading out on an early morning game drive through the Mababe wilderness. Mababe lies between some of northern Botswana’s best known wildlife areas and forms an important corridor linking Chobe, Savuti and the Okavango region.
The landscape is a mix of open plains, mopane woodland and seasonal floodplains, creating excellent habitat for elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and numerous antelope species. Predators such as lion, leopard, hyena and wild dog are also regularly found moving through the area.
Your guide will take time to follow tracks, interpret wildlife behaviour and explore the quieter parts of Mababe at an unhurried pace. Return to camp around midday for lunch and time to relax before heading out again in the afternoon. As the day cools, wildlife becomes more active and the light softens across the plains. Return to camp in the evening for dinner around the fire and another night in the Botswana wilderness.

Day 3
Welcome to Khwai
Welcome to Khwai
After breakfast, leave Mababe behind and begin the journey towards Khwai. The transfer is very much part of the safari, with the route taking you through changing woodland, open plains and wildlife country as you move closer to the waterways of the Okavango region.
There will be plenty of opportunity to enjoy sightings along the way, with your guide stopping whenever something interesting is encountered. Lunch will be enjoyed en route before continuing towards Khwai.
As you approach the Khwai area, the landscape begins to change, with more riverine woodland, floodplains and seasonal channels creating a rich habitat for wildlife. Elephant, buffalo, antelope and predators are frequently seen throughout the area.
You will arrive at camp later in the afternoon, settle into your tent and enjoy some time to relax before heading out for your first introduction to Khwai. Return to camp in the evening for dinner and another night under the Botswana sky.

Wildlife in Khwai Concession

Day 4
Khwai
Khwai
Begin the day with an early morning game drive through the Khwai area, exploring its floodplains, riverine woodland and seasonal channels. Khwai is known for excellent wildlife viewing, with regular opportunities to see elephant, buffalo, antelope, lion, leopard and wild dog.
Later in the day, exchange the safari vehicle for a traditional mokoro and experience the waterways from a completely different perspective. Guided by an experienced poler, you will move quietly through the channels, passing reed beds, water lilies and small islands while enjoying the birdlife and peaceful atmosphere of the Delta.
The mokoro excursion offers a slower and more intimate way to experience Khwai, with time to appreciate the smaller details of the landscape as well as any wildlife encountered along the water.
Return to camp later in the afternoon or early evening for drinks, dinner and another relaxed night in the wilderness.

Day 5

Welcome to Xakanaxa
After breakfast, leave Khwai and begin the journey south towards Xakanaxa in the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve. The transfer takes you through changing landscapes of woodland, open floodplains and seasonal channels, with plenty of opportunity for wildlife sightings along the way.
Your guide will treat the journey as a game drive, stopping for interesting sightings and allowing time to enjoy the scenery as you move deeper into the Okavango Delta. Lunch will be enjoyed en route before continuing towards Xakanaxa.
As you approach camp, the landscape becomes increasingly influenced by the Delta, with lagoons, channels and lush floodplains creating a very different atmosphere from the drier areas of the safari.
You will arrive at camp later in the afternoon, settle into your tent and enjoy some time to relax before dinner. Xakanaxa will be your final base on the expedition, offering a beautiful setting from which to experience the waterways and wildlife of the Okavango Delta.

Day 6
Xakanaxa
Xakanaxa
Wake in the heart of the Okavango Delta and begin the day with a relaxed morning in the Xakanaxa area. Surrounded by floodplains, lagoons, channels and riverine woodland, Xakanaxa offers a completely different atmosphere from the earlier stages of the safari.
Later, take to the water for a boat cruise through the Delta’s channels and lagoons. Travelling by boat allows you to experience the landscape from a new perspective, passing papyrus beds, reed lined waterways and open stretches of water rich in birdlife. Along the way, there may also be opportunities to see hippo, crocodile, elephant and other wildlife coming down to the water.
The slower pace of the boat safari gives you time to appreciate the beauty and scale of the Delta while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
Return to camp later in the day for your final evening in the wilderness, with dinner and time around the fire beneath the Botswana sky.

Day 7
Welcome to Maun
Welcome to Maun
After breakfast, enjoy your final morning in the Okavango Delta before beginning the journey back to Maun. The drive out offers one last opportunity to take in the changing landscapes and enjoy any wildlife encountered along the way.
As you leave the wilderness behind, your guide will continue towards Maun, bringing the Sands of the Okavango journey to a close after six nights exploring Mababe, Khwai and Xakanaxa.
On arrival in Maun, you will be transferred directly to your accommodation, where the safari officially comes to an end. It is a relaxed finish to the expedition and a final chance to reflect on the landscapes, wildlife and experiences shared along the way.
