The rest of the day is at leisure to relax after your flight, explore the surrounding neighbourhood, or simply unwind before the safari begins in earnest the following morning. Windhoek offers a relaxed introduction to Namibia, blending German colonial architecture with a modern African capital, and is the perfect starting point for the epic overland journey that lies ahead through some of the country's most iconic landscapes.

Day 2
Windhoek to the Kalahari Desert
Windhoek to the Kalahari Desert
Depart Windhoek and travel south into the vast red-dune landscapes of the Kalahari Desert, one of the largest sand basins in the world. Along the way enjoy the wide-open horizons and changing scenery of central Namibia as the terrain transforms into classic Kalahari savannah dotted with camelthorn trees. Arrive at Kalahari Anib Lodge in the late afternoon, where you can relax and take in the tranquil desert surroundings before dinner and an overnight stay, ready to continue the journey south towards the Fish River Canyon the next day.

Continue the journey south to the immense Fish River Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon, stretching some 160 kilometres and reaching depths of up to 550 metres. Travel onward to the small settlement of Aus, gateway to the Namib Desert and famous for its population of wild feral horses that roam the surrounding plains. The area offers dramatic mountain and desert scenery, and is a good base to unwind after days of travel while taking in the stark beauty of this remote part of Namibia before continuing on to the famous ghost town of Kolmanskop and the coast.

Spend a further night based at Klein-Aus Vista Desert Horse Inn, with time to explore the surrounding area, including an excursion to the evocative ghost town of Kolmanskop near Lüderitz. Once a thriving diamond-mining town in the early 1900s, Kolmanskop was abandoned mid-century and has since been slowly reclaimed by the shifting sands of the Namib Desert, creating a hauntingly beautiful photographic subject. The wild horses of the Aus area, said to be descendants of German cavalry and farm horses, can often be spotted grazing on the nearby plains.

Travel north to Sesriem, gateway to the world-famous red dunes of Sossusvlei, some of the highest and most photographed sand dunes on earth, set within the Namib-Naukluft National Park.
