Kampala/Entebbe to Kasese – Expedition Briefing

Your Rwenzori expedition begins with an early departure from Kampala or Entebbe toward western Uganda. The journey takes you through changing landscapes, rural communities, agricultural areas and eventually toward the dramatic Rwenzori foothills around Kasese. After arrival, check into your hotel and have time to relax after the journey. In the afternoon or evening, meet your expedition guide for a comprehensive briefing covering the route, altitude, weather, technical climbing requirements, equipment and safety procedures. Your team will also inspect your personal gear and identify anything that may need to be hired or replaced before the trek begins.

Day 2

Kasese – Nyakalengija – Nyabitaba Camp

Kasese – Nyakalengija – Nyabitaba Camp

After an early breakfast, drive from Kasese to Nyakalengija, the main trailhead for the Central Circuit. Here you will complete registration and meet the porters and mountain crew who will support the expedition. Once preparations are complete, begin hiking through cultivated areas before entering the lush montane forest of the Rwenzori Mountains. The trail climbs steadily through dense vegetation, with opportunities to see forest birds and primates. Continue toward Nyabitaba Camp, where you settle in for your first night on the mountain and receive a briefing about the following day's trek.

Day 3

Nyabitaba Camp – Bujuku Valley – Bujuku Camp

Nyabitaba Camp – Bujuku Valley – Bujuku Camp

After breakfast, leave Nyabitaba and continue deeper into the Rwenzori wilderness. The trail passes through thick montane forest and crosses challenging sections as it gradually gains elevation. Depending on the selected route and prevailing conditions, the trail passes around or through the Nyamwamba and Mubuku valley systems before continuing toward Bujuku. As you climb higher, the vegetation changes dramatically, with giant lobelias, giant groundsels and heather becoming more prominent. Arrive at Bujuku Camp in the spectacular Bujuku Valley and rest while your guides assess your acclimatization.

Day 4

Bujuku Camp – Scott Elliott's Point – Elena Camp

Today's stage takes you toward the high alpine zone of the Rwenzori. After breakfast, begin climbing from Bujuku toward the mountain ridges leading to Elena Camp. The trail involves steep sections and can become wet, muddy or slippery depending on conditions. Continue toward Scott Elliott's Point, where the surrounding landscape opens to dramatic views of the high peaks. From here, proceed toward Elena Camp, situated at approximately 4,563 metres. This is an important acclimatization stage before the technical summit attempt.

Day 5

Elena Camp – Margherita Peak – Elena Camp

Begin the first major summit attempt before dawn. After an early breakfast and final equipment check, start climbing toward Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley, the highest point of the Rwenzori Mountains at approximately 5,109 metres. The route involves demanding high-altitude terrain and may include rock scrambling, exposed sections, snow and glacial terrain depending on current mountain conditions. Your specialist guides will control the pace and rope procedures where required. After reaching the summit area, spend a short period taking photographs and appreciating the surrounding peaks before beginning the careful descent back to Elena Camp.

After breakfast, leave Elena and descend toward the dramatic mountain landscape around Freshfield Pass and Kitandara. Today's route provides a welcome change of pace following the Margherita summit attempt, although the terrain remains challenging. Cross high-altitude ridges and valleys while enjoying views toward Mount Baker, Mount Speke and other Rwenzori summits. Continue toward Kitandara Camp, located in a spectacular valley surrounded by towering peaks. Use the evening to recover, hydrate and prepare for the next summit objectives.

Today is dedicated to an attempt on Mount Baker, whose highest point, Edward Peak, reaches approximately 4,844 metres. Begin early with your technical equipment prepared and follow your specialist mountain guides toward the Baker massif. The route involves steep and potentially exposed terrain, and exact climbing conditions can vary considerably. Where conditions permit, continue toward the summit before descending carefully back toward Kitandara. If weather or mountain conditions prevent the summit attempt, the guide team may adjust the objective to another suitable high-altitude activity.

After an early breakfast, prepare for the Mount Speke summit objective. Mount Speke rises to approximately 4,890 metres and forms part of the impressive Rwenzori high mountain landscape. The summit attempt requires careful route selection, appropriate technical equipment and experienced guides. Depending on weather and route conditions, the expedition team will attempt one or more of the accessible Mount Speke summits before returning to a suitable high-altitude camp. Your guides will prioritize safe movement and adequate acclimatization throughout the day.

This flexible expedition day is reserved for additional summit objectives, weather delays or acclimatization requirements. Because conditions in the Rwenzori high mountains can change rapidly, maintaining a flexible schedule is essential. If the principal summit objectives have been completed and conditions are favorable, your guides may lead an additional high-altitude climb or exploration of another accessible peak or ridge. If weather has affected earlier attempts, this day can instead provide another summit window. The final objective is determined by the expedition leader.

Day 10

Begin the gradual descent from the high mountain zone after completing the principal summit objectives. The descent allows your body to recover from prolonged exposure to high altitude while giving you another opportunity to experience the Rwenzori's extraordinary landscapes. Depending on the route selected by the guides, continue toward Kitandara or reconnect with the Central Circuit toward Bujuku. As you lose elevation, the vegetation becomes increasingly dense and the air noticeably warmer.

Day 11

Continue descending through the changing ecological zones of the Rwenzori. The high alpine vegetation gradually gives way to giant heather, bamboo and montane forest as you lose altitude. Continue toward Nyabitaba and then onward to Nyakalengija, where the expedition formally concludes. Meet your vehicle and transfer to Kasese for a well-earned shower, dinner and comfortable night's rest. Your guide can also conduct a final expedition review and assist with arrangements for the following day's onward journey.

After breakfast, begin your return journey from Kasese toward Kampala or Entebbe. The drive provides an opportunity to reflect on the expedition while passing through western Uganda's countryside and local communities. Depending on your flight schedule, you can continue directly to Entebbe International Airport or spend an additional night in Entebbe. Travelers with later flights may also add a short Kampala or Entebbe experience before departure.
