Day 1

Zanzibar to Bagamoyo

Zanzibar to Bagamoyo

Take the morning ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam, where your guide meets you and drives north to Bagamoyo. Once a great trading port and the end of the old caravan routes this coastal town is full of stories. Walk through the old town, visit the Kaole ruins and the historic buildings, and hear how Swahili, Arab and colonial history meet here. Finish the day with a sunset by the Indian Ocean. Overnight in Bagamoyo.

Drive to Saadani National Park, one of the few places in Africa where the bush meets the beach. Set out on a game drive across open plains in search of giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest and elephant. In the afternoon glide along the Wami River by boat, passing hippos, crocodiles and abundant birdlife. End the day watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean. Overnight in Saadani.

Scenic transit to Mkomazi

Today is a relaxed transit day, driving inland and north with the Usambara and Pare mountains rising on the horizon. Pass sisal estates, small market towns and changing landscapes, with stops for lunch and to stretch your legs. You arrive at Mkomazi in the late afternoon in time for a quiet evening under big open skies. Overnight at Mkomazi.

Start early with a game drive in Mkomazi National Park, a wild and rarely visited park beneath the Pare Mountains. Look for oryx, gerenuk, lesser kudu and elephant, and enjoy having the park almost to yourselves. After lunch, continue to Moshi, where Kilimanjaro may appear above the clouds in the evening light. Overnight in Moshi.

In the late afternoon, continue to Karatu, in the highlands near Ngorongoro. Overnight in Karatu.

After a picnic lunch by the lake, drive up the crater wall and on to Arusha, where the tour ends in the late afternoon.
