The trail ascends steadily through the moorland into the dramatic Mackinder’s Valley, offering views of unique alpine vegetation such as giant lobelias and groundsels. As you gain altitude, the scenery becomes more rugged and expansive, with clear views of the main peaks ahead.

Acclimatization Day - Shipton's Campsite

Spend the day at Shipton’s Camp (4,200 m) acclimatizing to the altitude in preparation for the summit attempt. After breakfast, take short, gentle hikes around the camp, such as a trek to Hausberg Col, which rises slightly above the camp and offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, valleys, and glaciers. These walks help your body adjust to the thinner air while allowing you to explore the alpine landscape, observe flora such as giant lobelias and groundsels, and spot wildlife like rock hyraxes and birds. Later you will return to camp to rest, hydrate, and enjoy lunch. Spend the afternoon relaxing, reviewing the summit plan, and preparing for the early morning ascent.

Day 4

Shiptons - Lenana Summit - Chogoria Gate

Shiptons - Lenana Summit - Chogoria Gate

Wake up at 3:00 am for a pre-dawn ascent to Point Lenana, aiming to reach the summit for the sunrise. The climb begins on frozen scree and continues along a rocky track with some scrambling. On a bright moonlit night, headlamps are barely needed; without the moon, the clear sky offers excellent stargazing.

The summit trek takes 3–4 hours. From the top, you will enjoy panoramic views of Mount Kenya’s peaks, valleys, and glaciers. On a clear day, Mount Kilimanjaro may be visible on the horizon.

After reaching the summit, you’ll descend to Minto's Camp for breakfast and a short rest before continuing along the Chogoria Route, passing through the Gorges Valley with views of The Temple, Lake Michaelson, Mushroom Rocks, and the Giant Billiards Table.

You will complete the trek at Chogoria Gate in the late afternoon, at which point you will be transferred to your accommodations for dinner and your overnight stay, reflecting on the experience.
