Learn about the life of the Local Tribes Hadzabe and Datoga

Learn about the life of the Local Tribes Hadzabe and Datoga

Today you'll visit the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes. The Hadzabe, an indigenous ethnic group in Tanzania, live near the shores of Lake Eyasi and in the southern Serengeti. Although hunting is forbidden in the Serengeti, as is living there, the government makes an exception for the approximately 300-400 Hadzabe, as they are one of the last tribes in Africa who still maintain their traditional way of life. Traditionally, the Hadzabe use stone tools to hunt animals and to collect various berries, fruits, leaves, roots, and honey. Another unique element is the Hadzabe language, which consists of clicking sounds. Take part in various activities such as shooting with bow and arrow or the tribal dance.

After lunch at the nearest lodge, head to the Datoga tribe. They are a semi-nomadic people, who ensure their survival mainly through cattle and livestock, but nowadays also by farming beans and corn. Visit the dwellings and experience the culture of these people first-hand.

Visit of a Maasai Tribe and Safari in Serengeti

Your guide will drive you to a Maasai village off the beaten track. You will be greeted in the village by a ceremony in which the young men dance and try to jump as high as possible on the spot to prove their strength. Then take a look in the clay huts and discover the jewellery handmade by the Maasai.

Continue driving towards the most famous wildlife reserve in the world – the Serengeti. In addition to the vast grassland, there are also incredible natural spectacles awaiting you in the oldest national park in Tanzania. More than 1.5 million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of Thompson gazelles, 200’000 zebras, elephants, lions, cheetahs, giraffes and many other species live there. Depending on the season, your guide will choose the area where you are most likely to observe the migratory herds, which can be up to 40 km in length. During the annual migration, about 2 million wildebeests and zebras move along the best grazing grounds in a cycle which is always the same.

Migration of Wildebeests and Zebras in Serengeti

Today you will once more be in the Serengeti in search of wonderful animals. Your guide will use his trained eye to show you things that you wouldn't notice on your own. Of course, the elephant, lion, cheetah and the shy leopard are once more the focus of the search. Nevertheless, the pretty impala, the funny warthogs with their tails standing straight upright, hyenas, zebra- and buffalo herds and proud giraffes create beautiful photo opportunities, too. On the riverbanks you will find crocodiles and hippos. Rivers like the Grumeti and the Mara River are big obstacles for the thousands of wildebeest and zebra during the animal migration, so dramatic scenes take place when they try to cross them. These are magical moments when columns of animals pass by and you feel the earth vibrating below their hooves.

Follow the Predators and their Prey in Serengeti

Explore another part of Serengeti National Park, which has an area of about 14700 km². Your guide will discover some of the many predators and herbivores. However, not only the animals make charming photo opportunities, but also the different landscape forms. For example, the Seronera Plateau as the “heart of Serengeti”, which is dotted with Flat-topped Acacia trees. Have a look at the termite mounds, which are often used by cheetahs during migration as viewing points to spot the prey. In general, the open savannah grassland is an ideal hunting territory for lions, cheetah and leopards. It is also very impressive when an elephant herd crosses the way of your vehicle directly in front of you.

The Ngorongoro caldera, with a diameter measuring up to 21 km, is not only populated by more than 360 bird species, but also up to 25,000 large mammals. Elephants hide in the thickets of the jungle on the crater walls, which can reach up to 600 m in height, while zebras, antelopes and buffaloes frolic in the unique landscape on the crater floor. The grasslands are criss-crossed by lakes, swamps, and forests – simply a paradise for wildlife. The Ngorongoro Crater is also the place you are most likely to see all the Big Five – elephant, black rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. You will be particularly lucky if you discover one of the endangered black rhinos.
