Sesriem is also known for Sesriem Canyon, which is about 4 kilometers from Sesriem and is the second most important tourist attraction after Sossusvlei. The canyon is a natural canyon carved by the Tsauchab River in the local sedimentary rock, about a kilometer (0.6 miles) long and up to 30 meters (100 feet) deep.
Dune 45 is a star dune in the Sossusvlei area of the Namib Desert in Namibia. Its name comes from the fact that it is at the 45th kilometer of the road connecting the Sesriem gate and Sossusvlei. Standing over 170 meters, it is composed of 5-million-year-old sand that was detritus accumulated by the Orange River from the Kalahari Desert and then blown here.
