Drive to the attractive wooden village of Nale Moru (about 2 hours including a stop to get permits at Marangu). After signing in and preparing the porters, you will begin the hike on a wide path that winds through fields of maize and potatoes before entering pine forest. The track then starts to climb consistently but gently through an attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife. The forest begins to thin out and the first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone with extensive views over the Kenyan plains.

The morning hike is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim.

Today, our hike takes us from the Second Cave to the Third Cave, moving further into the striking semi-desert landscape.

Day 4
Acclimatization at Mawenzi Tarn

Distance: ~2-4 km / 3-4 hours
Elevation Change: 4,315m (Optional climb to 4,510m)
The Climb: A crucial rest and acclimatization day. You can take short hikes up the scree slopes of Mawenzi for stunning panoramic views before returning to camp to let your body adjust to the altitude.

Day 5
Kibo hut– Summit – Horombo hut

Starting just after midnight (12am–2am), we begin our ascent to Gilman’s Point on steep scree or snow, reaching the crater rim at 5,700m (18,700ft). From here, we continue upward to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa—where stunning views await and a photo opportunity at the summit.
Afterward, we descend, stopping at Kibo for lunch and rest before continuing down to Horombo encampment.

The Climb: You cross the lunar-like, barren plateau known as "The Saddle" connecting Mawenzi and Kibo. You will reach Kibo Hut at the base of the crater just before sunset to rest for the summit push.

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Distance: ~18 km / 5-6 hours
Elevation Change: 3,720m to 1,800m
The Climb: A steady trek takes you down through the moorland and lush rainforest to the Marangu Gate. You will sign out, receive your summit certificates, and take a vehicle back to Moshi or Arusha.
