Day 1

In the morning, you will be collected from your hotel and begin your journey to Arusha National Park, heading straight to the trailhead. The drive lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours, during which you may encounter various wildlife, including giraffes, buffaloes, and antelopes. Upon reaching Momella Gate, your guides will handle the necessary entry permit paperwork, and you will commence your trek to Miriakamba Huts, accompanied by an armed park ranger. After approximately two hours of hiking, you will arrive at Maio Falls, an ideal location for a rest and picnic. Following your break, you will continue towards the famous “fig tree arch” before finally reaching the Miriakamba Huts, where you can enjoy afternoon tea and snacks.

Day 2

After breakfast, you will ascend wooden steps along a steep path, where the increase in altitude will bring a noticeable chill compared to the previous day, making the trek feel more manageable. The rainforest often shrouds itself in low-hanging clouds, lending a dramatic ambiance to the vibrant foliage. After approximately two hours of climbing, you will reach the viewpoint known as “Mgongo wa Tembo” (elephant back) at an elevation of 3,200 meters, where you can take a well-deserved rest. The landscape will transition from rainforest to heather and moorland, and you are expected to arrive at Saddle Huts around midday. There, our team will provide you with a warm meal before you retire early for the night, as your wake-up call will come shortly after midnight.

Day 3

Saddle Hut (3570m) to Socialist Peak (4565m) to Miriakamba Hut (2514m)

Begin your journey at midnight, embarking on a challenging trek to Socialist Peak. Equipped with headlamps, you will navigate the trail through bushland, reaching Rhino Point at an elevation of 3,821 meters. Exercise caution, particularly on the steep sections leading to both Rhino Point and Cobra Point. After approximately four to five hours of strenuous hiking, you will arrive at the summit of Socialist Peak, where you can witness the breathtaking sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro and admire the impressive crater of Mount Meru, characterized by its steep walls and central ash cone. The return journey retraces your steps to Saddle Huts, where you can rest and rejuvenate with hot soup and tea before continuing your descent to Miriakamba Hut.

After breakfast today, you will begin your descent to Momella Gate. An early morning hike offers a unique opportunity to observe wildlife, as animals are typically more active during this time. Upon your arrival at Momella Gate, the African Wanderlust Adventures team will be ready to transport you back to your hotel in Arusha, a journey that will take approximately one hour and thirty minutes.
