Starting with six animals relocated from outside Uganda in 2005–6, the white rhinos of Ziwa have now bred up to more than 40 individuals. The long-term plan is to reintroduce rhinos into national parks where they are now locally extinct
extinct, but for now, Ziwa is the only place in Uganda where you can see Africa's second-bulkiest land mammal in the wild.

Ecologically, it is an extension of the forests that swathe the Congo basin, which means that a full 35 of the 435 recorded bird species are central African specials that occur nowhere else in
Uganda. Forest monkeys and antelope are also well represented.
Fort Portal is named after Sir Gerald Portal, a former British Consul General of Zanzibar. It's a medium-sized town set amidst the rainforests, tea plantations, and crater lakes that characterize the fertile Rwenzori foothills.

Leaving the vast savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park behind, your journey begins in the soft morning light as the park slowly comes alive. After breakfast and a final glance across the Kazinga Channel, you'll set off southward, following a scenic route that winds through open grasslands, crater lakes, and the rolling foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains.
The savannah gives way to terraced hills, banana plantations, and small villages where daily life unfolds along the roadside. The air grows cooler as you climb toward the highlands. From Kabale, the final stretch is short but breathtaking. The road snakes up steep hillsides, offering sweeping views of the emerald valleys below. As you crest the final ridge, Lake Bunyonyi reveals itself — a serene, mist‑covered jewel dotted with dozens of small islands. The descent toward the lakeshore is slow and winding, but every turn offers a postcard-perfect view.

Head Out by Boat onto Lake Bunyonyi to Visit some of its 20-year Old Islands
Dammed by a lava flow 8,000 years ago, Bunyonyi is a flooded river valley that extends for 25km from north to south but is nowhere more than 5km wide. The absence of hippos and crocodiles means swimming is safe; it’s also resulted in an unusually dense population of otters, which are often seen from the shore. A great beach chill-out destination, Bunyonyi
also offers plenty of walking and kayaking opportunities to keep active travelers busy. Canoeing, Lake Bunyonyi experience Africa away from the noise of vehicles by going on one of our canoeing excursions. You’ll get to places you can only get to by boat, and you might even get to see animals as they come down to drink.
