An early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater marks one of the great highlights of any Tanzania safari. Drop 600 metres onto the crater floor a UNESCO World Heritage Site and ancient volcanic caldera sheltering over 25,000 animals within its 260 square kilometres.
Lions roam the open grasslands in well-established prides, hippos wallow in the muddy pools, spotted hyenas move in large clans, and the alkaline shores of Lake Magadi shimmer with thousands of flamingos. The critically endangered Black Rhino makes its home here too a rare and privileged sighting that very few safari destinations can offer.
Spend the full morning working the crater floor with your guide before pulling over for a picnic lunch under the open sky — one of those simple moments that somehow becomes one of the best meals of the trip.
