Pretoria to Lekgalameetse
You will travel on your own with your 4x4 vehicle to the place where you will meet your guide. The meeting place will be communicated to you prior to the start of the tour.
We drive mostly on tarred roads to the start of the Orrie Baragwanath Pass on the Western side of Lekgalameetse. This is the start of the challenging but scenic 4x4 trail up the Drakensberg. It will take us to the top of the most northern tip of the Drakensberg. The trail hugs the mountain and you will climb 500 m over a distance of 7 km (330 m in the first 4 km).
Ablution facilities with water and electricity are available at the campsite.

Explore Lekgalameetse
After breakfast, we explore the Northern section of Lekgalameetse. The main entrance gate is also the start of the Orrie Baragwanath Pass up the Eastern side of the Drakensberg. It will take us to the top of the Drakensberg Mountain and you will climb 600 m over a distance of 12 km. It will take us to breathtaking views and we will visit sites of historical significance (e.g. the Pioneer Graves) and learn about the history of the area.
You will be amazed to learn that the names of a famous soccer team and a hospital have their origins in these mountains. The trails are not difficult and sometimes it will not even be necessary to engage low range. We will visit the highest point accessible by vehicle. This point is 1 520 m above sea level.
You will drive your own 4x4 vehicle.
We will again camp at the campsite we used the previous night. Tonight you will again prepare your own meal on the open fire made by the guide or use the gas appliances in your vehicle.

Lekgalameetse to Phalaborwa via the smallest city in South Africa and a 2 000+ year old Baobab tree
We depart at 07:00 from Lekgalameetse on our way to Phalaborwa. Along the way, we visit the smallest city in South Africa and learn about its history. It is amazing how nature has taken back this city. We visit the 2,000+-year-old Baobab tree near Gravelotte.
In Phalaborwa, you stock up on provisions, buy wood and fill up with fuel. We enter Letaba Ranch and drive to the Mtomeni Safari Camp on the banks of the Letaba River. The surrounding wilderness, the remoteness and the seclusion of travelling through rarely-seen areas are the main thrills of this trail. This campsite has no ablution facilities, no water and no electricity.

Day 4

Follow the 4x4 eco-trail in a southerly direction (± 95 km)
Join a guided morning walk. An experienced (and armed) field guide shares his knowledge of the fauna and flora to explain natural wonders. The walk is relaxed and doesn’t take longer than two hours, so no over-exhaustion will take place.
After you have made yourself breakfast, we follow the 4x4 trails past several water holes to maximise the game viewing opportunities and we stop at the Baderukwe Dam. Who knows what animals we will see? Continue along the 4x4 trails to our campsite, which is located next to the Baderukwe River. Spend the night there. The river flows underground, and elephants dig holes to drink from. These waterholes also benefit other animals.
This campsite has no ablution facilities, no water and no electricity. Use your shower bag to shower under the stars.
