On arrival at Skukuza or Nelspruit Airport, you'll be transferred by road into the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve and your home for the next two nights - Umkumbe Safari Lodge. The setting alone is worth the journey: the lodge sits right on the Sand River, and the suites' private decks look directly out over the water where wildlife comes and goes at their own pace throughout the day.
The open-plan main lodge flows naturally between inside and out, with comfortable lounge and dining areas that make the most of the river views at every hour. Between game drives, the pool is a good place to be, and the bar is where the day's sightings get compared and inevitably embellished.
The Sabi Sand needs little introduction, it is one of Africa's most celebrated private reserves, carrying a well-earned reputation for Big Five sightings, exceptional leopard encounters in particular. Your first game drive goes out this afternoon. It is, in every sense, a wonderful place to begin a safari.

Day 3-5
Transfer to Timabvati and Bateleur Safari Camp
Transfer to Timabvati and Bateleur Safari Camp
After your morning drive and breakfast, you'll transfer to Bateleur Safari Camp in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, a different reserve, a different atmosphere, and a very welcome change of pace as Bateleur goes deeper into the classic bush experience.
The tented camp is intimate and genuinely eco-friendly, running entirely on solar power without sacrificing an ounce of comfort. Spacious safari tents have large mesh windows that keep you connected to the sounds of the bush day and night, with en-suite bathrooms and a sitting area outside each one. The main deck looks out over a waterhole, always worth watching and the boma is where evenings really come alive, with dinners cooked over open flames by the camp chef.
The Timbavati is superb game country, and daily drives and extended bush walks with qualified rangers and trackers make the most of it. This is the kind of camp that reminds you why you came to Africa.

After your last mornings game drive and brunch, you will transfer to Hoedspruit Airport for onward travel.
