Mti mkubwa to Shira 1
Ascending from 2,785m (9,137ft) to 3,895m (12,779ft), gain an altitude of 1,110m. Following a restful night and a hearty breakfast, we bid farewell to the rainforest. The ascending path unfolds, gradually leaving the forest behind. The trail ascends steadily, revealing expansive views as we approach the rim of the Shira Plateau. Notice a drop in temperatures as we gain elevation, marking the transition to a new and captivating landscape.
Shira 1 to Moir Hut
Ascending from 3,895m (12,779ft) to 3,986m (13,077ft), gain 91m. While ending the day around the same elevation, this day is crucial for acclimatization. From Shira Plateau, proceed east up a ridge, passing the junction toward Kibo Peak. Continue southeast to the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth,” standing at 4,650m (15,250ft). After the tower, find a second junction leading to the Arrow Glacier. Descend to overnight at Barranco Camp, completing a vital phase in acclimatization.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Ascending from 3,986m (13,077ft) to 4,034m (13,253ft), gain 48m. Following breakfast, navigate a steep ridge to conquer the exhilarating Barranco Wall, leading to the Karanga Valley and the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. Karanga Camp to Barafu
Ascending from 4,034m (13,253ft) to 4,662m (15,295ft), gain 628m. Proceeding towards Barafu Camp, reaching it marks the completion of the South Circuit. This circuit provides diverse and breathtaking views of the summit from various angles. Following an early dinner, rest is paramount as preparation for summit night takes precedence. Overnight at Barafu Camp, anticipation building for the challenging ascent to come.
Barafu Summit to Mweka Hut
Ascending from 4,662m (15,295ft) to 5,895m (19,341ft), gain 1,233m. Descending to 3,090m (10,150ft) results in an altitude loss of 2,789m.
Continue towards the summit between Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, maintaining focus on the looming sense of accomplishment. Employing switchback motions in a northwesterly direction, ascend through heavy scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. Witness an awe-inspiring sunrise during a brief rest, with faster hikers possibly catching it from the summit. Expect snow on the remaining one-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Embark on a steep descent to Mweka Camp, pausing at Barafu for lunch and a brief rest. Gaiters and trekking poles are recommended for navigating uncooperative loose gravel and volcano ash terrain. Overnight at Mweka Camp, reflecting on the triumph of your Kilimanjaro ascent.

Mweka to Moshi
Descending from 3,090m (10,150ft) to 1,646m (5,400ft) over a 10 km distance, the hike takes approximately 3 to 4 hours through the rainforest habitat.
Post breakfast, embark on the descent to the Mweka Park gate, where you'll receive your well-earned summit certificates. Lower elevations may be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. Dress in shorts, t-shirts, rain gear, and warmer clothing for comfort.
After reaching the gate, continue for an additional hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle awaits at Mweka Village to transport you back to Arusha, marking the end of this remarkable Kilimanjaro expedition.
