Day 1

Momella Gates to Miriakamba huts

Momella Gates to Miriakamba huts

Drive from Arusha to Momella Gate, the guides will arrange the entry permit paperwork, and you will start trekking to Miriakamba Huts. An armed park ranger will accompany you from here. Afterward you will start climbing Mt Meru, the first day is more or less similar to a walking safari, on the way you should anticipate to spot some giraffes, zebras, antelopes and buffaloes. Since there is high possibility of spotting wildlife, you will be escorted by an armed ranger. After approximately 2 hours, you will reach Maio Falls – the perfect spot to rest and have a picnic. Thereafter, you will continue your trek to the well-known “fig tree arch.” Finally, you will arrive at the Miriakamba Huts in time for afternoon tea and snacks.

Change in elevation: Momela Gate (1,387m) to Miriakamba Huts (2,514m).

Day 2

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

After refreshing breakfast you will start your Mt Meru climbing on a steep path along the forest zone, you will follow wooden steps along a steep track. Due to the gain in altitude, it will be noticeably cooler than the preceding day and walking may look easier. The clouds often hang low in the rainforest, creating a moody atmosphere in the lush vegetation. After going uphill for approximately 2 hours, you will encounter the vantage point “Mgongo wa Tembo” (elephant back) at a height of 3,200m, where you will enjoy a well-earned break. The vegetation now changes from rainforest to heather and moorland and you should reach Saddle Huts at around mid-day.

Day 3

Saddle Hut /summit to Mriakamba

Saddle Hut /summit to Mriakamba

Morning call in the midnight with a cup of tea for your final ascend to the summit 4566m, the second highest mountain in Tanzania. Your guide will advice time to spend on the peak and time to start descending according to the present weather, then back to Sadle for lunch, there after lunch proceed with your climbing down for dinner and overnight Miriakamba hut.
