High-Altitude Drop Off Destination And Trekking To Shira 2 Camp
A guide and support crew will meet you at your hotel before you travel by vehicle (3–4 hours) to Kilimanjaro National Park’s western entrance: Londorossi Gate. Important: This is your first high-altitude day; follow these tips:
Drink over 4 liters of water daily in small, frequent sips.
Consider high-altitude aid medicine if advised by your doctor.
Nighttime may bring discomfort due to reduced oxygen intake, potentially causing headaches or nausea. Monitor your symptoms and inform your guide of any issues. Consult your doctor beforehand to address allergies or concerns. Your itinerary will include detailed advice from our team.

Trekking From Shira 2 Camp To The Lava Tower and Descent To Barranco Camp
After breakfast, you will leave Shira 2 Camp and start your hike to the key point of the route: Lava Tower. This section of the route has a lot of ascents and descents that end in a camp at over 4,600 m /15,091 f). Portions of the trek may be difficult, and it is common to experience some discomfort, but in order to successfully acclimate to the altitude you have to spend at least 1–2 hours here, so this is where you will enjoy your lunch.
Then, you will descend to Barranco Camp. Here you can see the famous Barranco Wall, impressive in both its massive size and steepness! The next day you will be climbing it, but don’t worry: it features a very simple hiking trail and is not intimidating at all.

Next, take a tougher hike to Karanga Camp with some ups and downs. Our guides will set a comfortable pace. At Karanga Camp (3,995 m / 13,106 ft), enjoy a hot lunch before starting an acclimatization hike.
This trek, heading toward Barafu Camp, involves a 300 m (984 ft) altitude gain to 4,335 m (14,222 ft) before descending back to Karanga Camp.
Important: Acclimatization hikes are crucial for increasing your chances of summiting Kilimanjaro and minimizing altitude sickness. Take them seriously, as they are designed to aid your body’s adjustment to the altitude. Trust your guides and stay hydrated throughout the journey.
