Day 5
Ngorongoro Crater - Arusha
Ngorongoro Crater - Arusha
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most remarkable wildlife destinations in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in northern Tanzania within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the crater is the world’s largest intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. Formed over two million years ago by a collapsed volcano, it spans approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) in diameter and plunges 600 meters (about 2,000 feet) deep, creating a natural enclosure teeming with wildlife.
Often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the crater is home to an incredible density of animals in a compact area, making it one of the few places where visitors can easily spot the “Big Five”—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the endangered black rhino—in a single game drive. The crater floor includes grasslands, swamps, a soda lake (Lake Magadi), and acacia woodlands, supporting over 25,000 large animals, including wildebeest, zebras, hippos, hyenas, jackals, and numerous bird species.
