Day 1

Flight to Gondar – Drive to Simien Mountains & Introductory Trek

Flight to Gondar – Drive to Simien Mountains & Introductory Trek

Begin your adventure with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Gondar. Upon landing, a representative will meet you either at Gondar Airport or your hotel, and from there, you’ll set off on a picturesque two-hour drive to Debark, the official gateway to the Simien Mountains. At the park headquarters, your guide will arrange entry permits and introduce you to your accompanying park scout. From Debark, another hour’s drive brings you closer to the mountain range, where you’ll embark on your first gentle hike along the rim of the escarpment. This introductory trek allows you to acclimatize while soaking in expansive views of the northern Ethiopian lowlands. As you walk, you’ll likely encounter your first troops of gelada baboons, distinguished by their flowing manes and expressive faces, often found grazing peacefully on the mountain grasslands. Overnight camping at Sankaber a basic camping setup under the stars at the edge of the escarpment.

Trek from Sankaber to Gich

Trek from Sankaber to Gich

After breakfast, begin your trek along the eastern escarpment, making your way down into the Kaba Valley where you’ll follow a narrow ridge out to a precipice with expansive views over the Simien foothills. One of the highlights of today’s route is a dramatic waterfall, where the Jinbar River plunges some 500 meters into the gorge below—an ideal spot to take in the landscape and snap some memorable photos. Following this awe-inspiring sight, you’ll continue for another couple of hours through a mix of alpine meadows and barley fields, stopping for a peaceful lunch beside the river. As you approach the remote village of Gich, you’ll be invited into a traditional home to experience an authentic Ethiopian coffee ceremony, a social ritual central to local culture. In the late afternoon, ascend to the Kedadit Viewpoint, where you’ll catch the golden hues of the sunset spilling over the cliffs and valleys, before heading back to your campsite for dinner and rest.

Day 3

Trek from Gich to Chennek

Trek from Gich to Chennek

Today’s journey is among the most scenic and physically rewarding of the entire trip. Departing from Gich, you’ll walk through a landscape covered in giant lobelia plants, their tall, alien-like stalks rising across the open fields. The trail leads to the majestic Imet Gogo viewpoint, where you’ll stand at the edge of a sheer cliff, looking down at a mosaic of valleys and the uniquely sculpted volcanic outcrops in the distance. From there, descend into the Jinbahir Valley, gaining a whole new angle on Imet Gogo and the raw, carved geology of the Simien range—where it feels as if the earth has been ripped apart by ancient forces. The path continues along the knife-edge of the escarpment with sheer vertical drops, culminating in a climb to a summit at 4070 meters, where you’ll pause for a well-earned lunch surrounded by epic views. The day ends with a steep descent into Chennek Camp, your home for the night. This location offers expansive views and frequent sightings of Walia ibex.

Day 4

Ascent to Buwahit

Ascent to Buwahit

Rise early for your final trek—an ascent to Buwahit Pass, the second-highest peak in the Simien range, standing at 4430 meters. This invigorating hike takes you through rocky highlands with panoramic views, offering an unmatched perspective of the region’s jagged skyline. With a bit of luck, you may once again spot the elusive Walia ibex, an endangered mountain goat found nowhere else on earth. From the summit, you’ll also have a distant view of Ras Dejen, Ethiopia’s highest point (4543 m), a fitting finale to your mountainous journey. After taking in the views and snapping your final summit photos, you’ll descend back to Chenek Camp, where your vehicle awaits for the return journey to Gondar—a scenic four-hour drive through rolling hills and farmlands.
