Scenic Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your 3-Day Gorilla Trekking Safari begins with an early morning departure from Kampala or Entebbe, heading southwest to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This scenic journey covers approximately 10 hours, but the breathtaking views and stops along the way make the trip enjoyable. One of the first notable stops is at the Equator, where you can take photos at this iconic marker that divides the northern and southern hemispheres. The Equator stop offers a great opportunity to stretch your legs, enjoy a quick snack, and explore some local artisan shops for souvenirs.

As you continue your journey, the landscape transforms into a picturesque mosaic of terraced hills, valleys, and vibrant farmlands. Western Uganda is known for its rolling highlands, particularly the Kabale and Kisoro regions, which are referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa” due to their striking resemblance to the Swiss Alps.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi and Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

On the second day of your safari, you will rise early for a hearty breakfast, then head to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s headquarters for a briefing on the day’s activities. Here, expert park rangers will provide important information about gorilla trekking rules, ensuring the safety of both visitors and the gorillas. Trekking groups are limited to eight people to minimize impact on the gorillas, and you’ll be assigned a group to track one of the several habituated gorilla families in the park.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is an exhilarating experience that takes you deep into the dense forest, following trails created by the gorillas themselves. The trek can last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorillas, with park guides leading the way and providing fascinating insights about the forest ecosystem. As you approach the gorillas, the excitement builds. Once you locate the gorillas, you’ll be allowed to spend one magical hour observing them.

The final day of your safari begins with a leisurely breakfast at Bunyonyi Safaris Resort. After breakfast, you’ll have time to explore the area around Lake Bunyonyi. You can opt for various activities such as canoeing, swimming (in the safe areas of the lake), or taking a guided nature walk along the lakeshore. The lake’s islands are shrouded in legend, and a visit to some of them offers fascinating insights into local culture and history. One of the most famous islands is Akampene (Punishment Island), where, according to tradition, unmarried pregnant girls were abandoned as a form of punishment.

In addition to its rich cultural heritage, Lake Bunyonyi is a haven for birdwatchers. The lake is home to over 200 bird species, making it a prime location for birding enthusiasts. From the vibrant weaver birds to the graceful grey-crowned cranes, the variety of birdlife is simply stunning.
