Upon arrival at Songwe Airport in Mbeya, you will be greeted by your tour guide who will assist you with your luggage. After a brief introduction, you will embark on a scenic drive to Kitulo National Park, which is approximately one hour away from Mbeya. The journey offers stunning views of the Southern Highlands.

Once you arrive at the park headquarters in Matamba, you will check into your accommodation, which could be a lodge or campsite depending on your preference. After settling in, enjoy a welcome dinner featuring local cuisine. This evening can be spent relaxing and preparing for the adventures ahead.

Exploring the Flora and Fauna of Kitulo National Park

After an early breakfast, set out for a guided nature walk through the park. This area is renowned for its rich biodiversity, particularly its wildflowers, earning it the nickname "Serengeti of Flowers." During this hike, you will have the opportunity to see various endemic species such as butterflies and birds unique to this region.

Your guide will explain the significance of different plant species and their ecological roles. You may also encounter wildlife such as zebras and various antelope species during your trek. After a full morning of exploration, return to your lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, consider participating in birdwatching activities around Lake Dhambwe or other designated areas within the park. With over 200 bird species recorded here, including migratory birds from Europe and South Africa, this experience is sure to be rewarding.

Hiking Adventure to Mtorwi Peak

Following breakfast at your lodge or campsite, prepare for a day hike to Mtorwi Peak (2,961 meters). This trek is one of the highlights of Kitulo National Park and provides breathtaking panoramic views of both the park and surrounding landscapes.

The hike typically takes several hours; thus, it’s advisable to carry enough water and snacks. Along the way, enjoy sightings of unique flora and fauna while learning about their habitats from your guide. Once at the peak, take time to rest and appreciate the stunning vistas before descending back down.

After returning from your hike, enjoy a well-deserved dinner at your accommodation followed by relaxation under the stars.

Afterward, check out from your accommodation and begin your journey back to Mbeya for departure via Songwe Airport or continue onto another destination within Tanzania.
