Day 1

Arusha to Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Arusha to Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha, a bustling city about 1.5–2 hours from the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive takes you through rural Tanzanian landscapes-small farms, banana plantations, and local villages-offering a glimpse of the region’s rich culture and natural beauty. Upon arrival at Machame Gate (1,800 meters / 5,905 feet), you'll complete park registration, meet your full mountain crew (guides, porters, and cooks), and finalize gear checks. The atmosphere is often buzzing with excitement and nerves as groups prepare to enter Kilimanjaro National Park. As you gain altitude, the forest begins to thin slightly, and by late afternoon, you'll reach Machame Camp (3,000 meters / 9,840 feet), set in a clearing on the edge of the forest. The air is noticeably cooler, and views begin to open up toward the summit on clear days.

Day 2

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After a hearty breakfast and a spectacular sunrise (if the weather cooperates), you’ll begin your second day on the mountain. The trail leaves the rainforest behind, and you’ll enter the moorland zone, a unique alpine ecosystem with low shrubs, hardy grasses, and strange, otherworldly plants like giant groundsels and lobelias. The trail is steeper than Day 1 and involves a steady uphill climb over rocky ridges and lava flows. The terrain is more open now, offering panoramic views of the Shira Plateau, Mount Meru, and eventually, your first clear glimpse of Kibo Peak, Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped summit.

You’ll arrive at Shira Camp (3,840 m / 12,600 ft) by early afternoon. This exposed plateau, once a lava flow from Kilimanjaro’s early eruptions, provides dramatic views-on clear days, you’ll see Kibo Peak dominating the skyline and Mount Meru visible behind you. Shira Camp is often windy and colder than the previous night, especially after sunset.

Day 3

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

You’ll start with a gradual ascent from Shira Camp across the high-altitude moorlands. The vegetation becomes more sparse, and the landscape turns into a rocky alpine desert, with wide open spaces, loose stones, and dramatic volcanic features. As you gain altitude, the air becomes thinner, and the trail takes on a more lunar-like appearance. You’ll start to feel the effects of altitude, which is exactly the point of today’s route.

Barranco Camp is one of the most scenic campsites on Kilimanjaro, nestled in a valley below the imposing Barranco Wall. On a clear evening, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Kibo summit, glaciers, and a star-filled sky.

Tonight is colder than previous nights, and you may feel the altitude more acutely. Rest, eat well, and drink plenty of fluids to help your body recover and adjust.

Day 4

Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

The day begins with a challenging climb up the Barranco Wall, a 257-meter (843-foot) vertical rock face that appears intimidating but is entirely manageable with the help of your guide and a careful, steady pace. You won’t need technical climbing skills—just some hands-on scrambling in a few places. The climb takes about an hour, and the views from the top are absolutely stunning, with Kibo Peak looming ahead and Karanga Valley far below.

Barafu means "ice" in Swahili, and the name is fitting-this camp is cold, windy, and completely exposed. The view of Mawenzi Peak to the east and Kibo’s icy slopes ahead creates a surreal, almost lunar atmosphere.

You’ll be served an early dinner, then briefed by your guide on summit night, which starts just before midnight. Most hikers rest (or at least try to sleep) around 6–7 PM. It’s crucial to hydrate, layer your gear for the cold, and mentally prepare for the long night ahead.

Day 5

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Your summit attempt begins shortly after midnight, under the cover of darkness. You’ll wake around 11 PM for tea and a light snack, dress in multiple warm layers, and begin your slow ascent with headlamps lighting the trail. The climb is steep and demanding, with loose scree and switchbacks up to Stella Point (5,739 m) on the crater rim. From there, you’ll continue along a gentler but exhausting final ridge to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft)-the highest point in Africa. It’s brutally cold, often windy, and the air is very thin. You’ll rely on mental strength and sheer determination.

If all goes well, you’ll reach Uhuru Peak around sunrise-a moment of immense emotion and triumph. The summit offers spectacular panoramic views of the glaciers, the vast crater, and the African plains far below.

You’ll spend only a short time at the top (5–10 minutes), due to the extreme altitude and cold, then begin your descent to Mweka Camp.

Day 6

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Arusha

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Arusha

You’ll wake to warmer temperatures and thicker air at Mweka Camp, often greeted by dew-covered vegetation and birdcalls from the forest below. After breakfast and final goodbyes to your support team, you’ll begin the last leg of your trek — a long descent through the lush montane rainforest. This part of the trail is beautiful but often muddy and slippery, especially if it’s been raining. You’ll pass through dense jungle, vines, giant ferns, and maybe spot blue monkeys or colorful birds as you make your way down.

After 3 to 4 hours, you’ll reach Mweka Gate, the official end of your Kilimanjaro journey. This is where you sign out of the park, receive your summit certificate, and enjoy a final group celebration.

From Mweka Gate, your team will drive you back to Arusha, which takes about 2–3 hours. The drive winds through villages, farmland, and eventually returns you to the comforts of your hotel.
