Often referred to as the Eighth Natural Wonder of the World, the Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera. It was formed approximately 2 million years ago when a massive volcano erupted and collapsed inward, creating a vast, enclosed basin with steep 600-meter (1,968-foot) walls.
Spanning over 19 kilometers (12 miles) in diameter, the crater is home to a rich and diverse ecosystem—ranging from lush acacia woodlands and swampy wetlands to open grasslands.
