Day 1
Londorossi Gate – Big Tree Camp

On the first day, you’ll hike about 5 kilometers (3 miles), which usually takes 3 to 4 hours. The trail begins at Londorossi Gate, where you register with the park officials before starting your trek. You’ll walk through a thick, green rainforest filled with tall trees and rich wildlife. The path is gentle and shaded, making for a pleasant start to your climb. By the end of the day, you’ll reach Big Tree Camp, where you’ll rest and prepare for the days ahead.

Day 2
Big Tree Camp – Shira 1 Camp

On the second day, you’ll hike about 8 kilometers (5 miles) over 5 to 6 hours. The trail climbs steadily out of the dense rainforest and into the open moorland zone. Here, the landscape changes with fewer trees and more shrubs and grasses. Along the way, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the Shira Plateau, a wide, flat volcanic landscape. The day ends at Shira 1 Camp, where you’ll set up camp and rest for the next day’s trek.

Day 3

On day three, you’ll hike about 5 kilometers (3 miles), which usually takes 4 to 5 hours. The trek crosses the wide, open Shira Plateau, offering expansive views of the surrounding mountains and volcanic landscapes. The trail gently ascends as you make your way to Shira 2 Camp. This day is important for acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the higher altitude while you rest and prepare for the more challenging days ahead.

Day 4
Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

On day four, you’ll cover about 10 kilometers (6 miles) over 6 to 8 hours. The hike takes you steeply up to Lava Tower, a rocky outcrop at 4,630 meters, which is an important spot for acclimatization. After spending some time there, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp at a lower altitude to rest. The landscape here changes to the dry, rocky alpine desert zone, with sparse vegetation and wide-open views.

Day 5
Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

On day five, you’ll hike about 5 kilometers (3 miles), taking around 4 to 5 hours. The day’s highlight is climbing the Barranco Wall, a steep and challenging rock face that requires careful footing and some scrambling. After reaching the top, the trail descends into the Karanga Valley, where you’ll find Karanga Camp. This area is still in the alpine desert zone, with rugged terrain and sparse vegetation. You’ll rest here overnight to prepare for the next day.

Day 6
Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

On day six, you’ll hike about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles), which usually takes 4 to 5 hours. The trail continues through the alpine desert as you make your way to Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit attempt. Here, you’ll rest and prepare both mentally and physically for the challenging climb to the summit that starts the next day. The landscape is rocky and barren, with spectacular views of the peaks ahead.

Day 7
Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

On day seven, you’ll face the toughest part of the climb about 16 kilometers (10 miles) round trip, taking between 12 and 16 hours. You’ll start just after midnight from Barafu Camp, trekking slowly and carefully through the cold, thin air toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro. Reaching the summit in time for sunrise rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views. After taking in the scenery, you’ll begin a long descent down to Mweka Camp, moving from the arctic summit zone back through alpine desert and into the rainforest. You’ll rest overnight at Mweka Camp, recovering from the long day.

Day 8

On the final day, you’ll hike about 10 kilometers (6 miles), which usually takes 3 to 4 hours. The trail winds down through the lush rainforest, with cooler temperatures and plenty of greenery. You’ll make your way to Mweka Gate, where you officially exit the park. After completing the trek, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel or lodge to rest and celebrate your achievement.
