Marangu Gate 1860m to Mandara Hut 2700m

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 8 km / 5 miles
Habitat: Montane Forest
Overnight: Mandara Hut (Full Board)

In the morning, you'll be greeted by your experienced mountain guides and driven from your hotel to Marangu Gate, located at the southeastern base of Mount Kilimanjaro. Here, registration with the national park authorities will be completed and final gear checks performed.

The trek begins through lush rainforest, with a good chance of encountering unique flora and possibly wildlife such as blue monkeys or colobus monkeys. A picnic lunch is served en route. By early afternoon, you reach Mandara Hut, a well-maintained camp nestled in a forest clearing.

After settling in, an optional short hike to Maundi Crater offers an excellent acclimatization opportunity and panoramic views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya, weather permitting.

Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles
Habitat: Moorland
Overnight: Horombo Hut (Full Board)

Following breakfast, you’ll ascend steadily out of the rainforest zone and into the moorland ecosystem, where giant groundsels, heathers, and lobelias dominate the landscape. The views begin to open up, offering glimpses of Mawenzi, one of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones.

Today’s hike presents a noticeable gain in elevation, and your guides will encourage a slow, measured pace to help you acclimatize. Upon reaching Horombo Hut, located on a rocky plateau, you’ll enjoy hot refreshments, dinner, and a chance to relax and absorb the spectacular surroundings.

Acclimatization at Horombo Hut 3720m

Optional Hike: Horombo Hut to Zebra Rocks or to the Mawenzi Saddle (up to 4,300m)
Overnight: Horombo Hut (Full Board)

This day is dedicated to acclimatization—a vital part of successful high-altitude trekking. After breakfast, you’ll embark on a guided acclimatization hike toward the Mawenzi Saddle, situated between the strikingly eroded Mawenzi Peak and the glacial dome of Kibo.

The hike provides both elevation gain and dramatic scenery, helping your body adjust to the thinner air. After reaching a suitable elevation—often around the saddle or Zebra Rocks—you'll descend to Horombo Hut for rest and preparation for the days ahead.

Day 4

Horombo Hut 3720m to Kibo Hut 4703m

Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Kibo Hut (Full Board)

Today’s trek takes you into the stark, surreal environment of the alpine desert zone. Vegetation is sparse, and the air becomes thinner as you cross the Saddle, a broad expanse of volcanic rock connecting Mawenzi and Kibo.

Water is scarce at Kibo Hut, so porters will collect and carry water from the last available source. You arrive at Kibo Hut by mid-afternoon, where a hot meal is served early, followed by several hours of rest.

As the summit attempt begins just before midnight, you’ll need to sleep as early as possible. Your guides will conduct a pre-climb briefing to prepare you for the challenges ahead.

Day 5

Summit Attempt – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak 5895m and down to Horombo Hut

Hiking Time: 12–15 hours (6–8 up, 5–7 down)
Distance: 21 km / 13 miles
Habitat: Arctic (Summit) to Moorland
Overnight: Horombo Hut (Full Board)

At approximately 11:00 PM to midnight, you'll begin the most demanding part of the climb—an overnight ascent to the summit. Using headlamps, you’ll make your way up steep switchbacks on loose scree, aiming for Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. Most climbers reach Gilman’s by sunrise, greeted with dramatic views over the African plains.

From there, it's another 1.5 to 2 hours to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain. After celebrating briefly and taking photos, you begin the descent, retracing your steps to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal, then continue down to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved overnight.

Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Distance: 20 km / 12.5 miles

The final descent leads you through moorland and into the lush rainforest. It’s a long but gradual trek back to Marangu Gate, where you’ll sign out of the park and receive a climbing certificate (green for Gilman’s Point, gold for Uhuru Peak).

A celebratory lunch will be served near the gate, prepared fresh by your support team. After farewells to the mountain crew, you are transferred to your hotel near Arusha for a hot shower, a farewell dinner, and rest—or transfer to the airport for departure.
