Lemosho Gate (2100 m) to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2820 m)
Your adventure begins at Lemosho Gate, situated at 2,100 meters above sea level. After park formalities and meeting your mountain crew, you start your trek through the lush montane rainforest. This part of the journey is filled with towering trees, moss-covered rocks, and the potential to spot wildlife such as black-and-white colobus monkeys. Mti Mkubwa (2820 m) to Shira 1 Camp (3610 m)
After a hearty breakfast, you leave the dense rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper and rockier as you ascend to the Shira Plateau, offering your first expansive views of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes. By the time you reach Shira 1 Camp at 3,610 meters, the landscape has opened up, with sparse vegetation and a clear view of Kibo Peak in the distance. The scenery becomes more dramatic, with strange alpine plants and ever-expanding views of Kilimanjaro. You arrive at Shira 2 Camp, perched at 3,850 meters, where the air is noticeably thinner. Shira 2 (3850 m) to Barranco Camp (3976 m) via Lava Tower (4630 m)
This is one of the most important acclimatization days on the route. You begin by gradually ascending to Lava Tower, a striking volcanic rock formation standing at 4,630 meters. The trail here enters the alpine desert zone — dry, stark, and beautiful. After spending time at this high point, you descend down to Barranco Camp at 3,976 meters. Though you sleep lower than you climbed, this strategy — “climb high, sleep low” — helps your body adjust more efficiently to the altitude.
