Lemosho Gate (2100 m) to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2820 m)

Your adventure begins at Lemosho Gate, situated at 2,100 meters above sea level. After park formalities and meeting your mountain crew, you start your trek through the lush montane rainforest. This part of the journey is filled with towering trees, moss-covered rocks, and the potential to spot wildlife such as black-and-white colobus monkeys. The air is fresh, and the trail winds gently uphill until you reach Mti Mkubwa Camp at 2,820 meters, nestled in the forest. This will be your first overnight stay on the mountain.

Mti Mkubwa (2820 m) to Shira 1 Camp (3610 m)

After a hearty breakfast, you leave the dense rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper and rockier as you ascend to the Shira Plateau, offering your first expansive views of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes. By the time you reach Shira 1 Camp at 3,610 meters, the landscape has opened up, with sparse vegetation and a clear view of Kibo Peak in the distance. The altitude is more noticeable here, and your body begins the vital process of acclimatization.

Day 3

Shira 1 Camp (3610 m) to Shira 2 Camp (3850 m)

Shira 1 Camp (3610 m) to Shira 2 Camp (3850 m)

Today’s trek is shorter and more gradual, allowing your body more time to adapt to the increasing altitude. You cross the Shira Plateau, a wide, open expanse formed by ancient volcanic activity. The scenery becomes more dramatic, with strange alpine plants and ever-expanding views of Kilimanjaro. You arrive at Shira 2 Camp, perched at 3,850 meters, where the air is noticeably thinner. This is a key day for acclimatization.

Shira 2 (3850 m) to Barranco Camp (3976 m) via Lava Tower (4630 m)

This is one of the most important acclimatization days on the route. You begin by gradually ascending to Lava Tower, a striking volcanic rock formation standing at 4,630 meters. The trail here enters the alpine desert zone — dry, stark, and beautiful. After spending time at this high point, you descend down to Barranco Camp at 3,976 meters. Though you sleep lower than you climbed, this strategy — “climb high, sleep low” — helps your body adjust more efficiently to the altitude.

Barranco Camp (3976 m) to Karanga Camp (4035 m)

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but rewarding climb that involves some scrambling. Once you reach the top, you're treated to panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and the mountain itself. The trail continues with undulating terrain, crossing small streams and ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp at 4,035 meters. This camp is an important resting point before your final push to base camp.

Today you ascend to your high camp at Kosovo, located at 4,800 meters. The terrain is barren and desolate, with only hardy alpine plants surviving the harsh conditions. As you climb higher, you’ll begin to feel the effects of the altitude more acutely. Once at camp, you rest and prepare for the summit attempt. Dinner is early, and you’ll head to bed shortly after sunset, as the summit attempt begins just after midnight.

Summit Night – Kosovo Camp (4800 m) to Uhuru Peak (5895 m) then down to Mweka Camp (3100 m)

Just after midnight, under the stars, you begin your ascent to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The climb is long and strenuous, but as dawn approaches, you reach Stella Point at 5,756 meters, where the first light of day paints the sky in pinks and golds. After a short rest, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. After celebrating your achievement, you begin the long descent, returning to Kosovo and continuing all the way down to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters for a well-earned rest.
