Arrival at Londorossi Gate and Hike to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate on the western side of the mountain. After park registration and permits are sorted, you’ll continue to the trailhead where your trek begins. The hike on this first day is a gentle climb through lush rainforest, alive with the sounds of birds and the chance to spot black-and-white colobus monkeys. By late afternoon, you’ll reach Mti Mkubwa Camp—also known as Big Tree Camp—where you’ll have dinner and spend your first night under the stars.

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
After breakfast, the trail quickly leaves the dense forest and ascends through the heather and moorland zone. The climb is more challenging today, but the views become increasingly impressive as you reach the Shira Plateau—an ancient caldera. You’ll arrive at Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon, where you'll begin to feel the effects of the higher altitude.

Day 3
Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
This is a shorter and more relaxed day to help with acclimatization. The trail continues across the vast and scenic Shira Plateau, with wide-open views of the mountain and surrounding plains below. You’ll reach Shira 2 Camp by midday, giving you time to rest and enjoy the landscape. Depending on weather and energy levels, you may also take an optional acclimatization hike in the afternoon.

Day 4
Shira 2 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Shira 2 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Today is one of the most important for acclimatization. You’ll hike up to the striking Lava Tower at 4,630 meters—a significant altitude gain—before descending to Barranco Camp. This approach, often called “climb high, sleep low,” helps your body adapt to the thinner air. Lava Tower marks the entrance into the alpine desert zone, and although the climb is tough, the views of the Western Breach and surrounding valleys are rewarding. The descent to Barranco Camp is steep but scenic, and you’ll camp below the impressive Barranco Wall.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with a scramble up the Barranco Wall, a dramatic and challenging cliff face that provides a thrilling start to the morning. Despite appearances, it is very doable and a highlight for many trekkers. After reaching the top, the trail winds through valleys and ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp. This is a relatively short day to give your body more time to adjust to the altitude.

Day 6
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today’s trek leads to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt. The landscape becomes more barren and rocky as you approach the high alpine zone. You’ll arrive in the early afternoon, giving you time to rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare for the overnight climb to the summit. It's important to stay warm and hydrated today, as the summit push will begin shortly after midnight.

Day 7
Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then down to Mweka Camp
Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then down to Mweka Camp
This is the most demanding and exhilarating day of the trek. You’ll wake around midnight for a hot drink and a light snack, then begin the slow and steady climb toward the summit. The trail is steep and cold, but under a sky full of stars, you’ll make your way to Stella Point on the crater rim just in time for sunrise. From there, it's a final push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters.
After celebrations and photos at the summit, you’ll begin the long descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp where you’ll spend your last night on the mountain.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi/Arusha
After a well-earned night of rest, the final descent takes you back through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail can be slippery, especially if wet, but the thick canopy and birdlife make for a pleasant walk. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate—gold for reaching Uhuru Peak—and say goodbye to your trekking crew. From here, you'll be driven back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to relax and celebrate your incredible achievement.
