Day 1
Transfer to Nyungwe Forest and canopy walk
Transfer to Nyungwe Forest and canopy walk
Enjoy your breakfast, then at 8 AM, check out of your hotel and head to Nyungwe Forest National Park. After lunch, embark on the canopy walk. The canopy walk requires some light hiking since you’ll access the suspended bridge via the 2.1 Km Igishigishi trail, a hiking route within Nyungwe National Park. Upon completing that trail, you'll reach the 160-meter suspended bridge above the forest. This hike shouldn’t discourage you from participating in the walk; it is quite manageable even for those hiking for the first time, though there are a few steep sections due to the mountainous terrain. You just need to wear hiking shoes or boots, bring a rain jacket, a snack (especially for kids), a water bottle, and, of course, your camera to capture the unforgettable moments. Return in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.

Chimpanzees tracking in Nyungwe forest national park
Early Morning at 5 AM, leave your lodge with a packed lunch, and make your way to the park’s offices for a briefing on the primates and the forest. You will then enter the tropical rain forest in search of the shy chimpanzees hiding in the tree branches. While on this walk, you may also see mangabeys, colobus, vervet, and red-tailed monkeys. After the trek, you will return to the Lodge for lunch and visit the tea plantation for photos. In the afternoon, you will leave Nyungwe National Park and go to the peaceful shores of Lake Kivu. There, you will relax at your lakeside accommodation.
Day 3
Lake Kivu and drive back to Kigali
Lake Kivu and drive back to Kigali
At 9.00 AM, proceed to Napoleon Island by boat. The Island is one of the tallest in Kivu. The elevation from the water’s edge to the summit is just over 100 m, giving you a spectacular view of the surrounding lake, islands and shoreline. The real name is Nyamunini Island, but as you approach the Island, you immediately see where it gets its name. The profile of the island closely resembles the historical hats which were popular in European army uniforms at the end of the 18th century, and Napoleon is commonly seen depicted in this kind of hat. Hence the name Napoleon Island. Some interesting bird species are often found on Napoleon Island, and the taller trees give refuge to palm nut vultures and fish eagles, which can often be seen. Other bird species, such as hammerkop and kingfishers, are common. The most well-known mammals on the Island are fruit bats. There is a colony of as many as 40,000 straw colored fruit bats living on the Island. Back and transfer to Kigali.
