Day 1
Morning:
Depart early for a scenic 110 km drive north to Debre Libanos Monastery, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot. Explore the monastery complex, see the beautifully painted church, and learn about its spiritual significance. Visit the nearby cave where the saint is believed to have meditated for years.
Midday:
Walk to the Portuguese Bridge, a historic stone bridge surrounded by stunning views and waterfalls during the rainy season. Watch for Gelada baboons and endemic bird species along the cliffs.
Afternoon:
Continue to the Blue Nile Gorge, often called “Africa’s Grand Canyon.” Enjoy breathtaking views of the deep ravine carved by the Blue Nile River. Stop for a packed or roadside lunch en route.
Evening:
Return to Addis Ababa in the early evening. Depending on your schedule, you may opt for an airport transfer or a final evening at leisure in the city.
