Day 2
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Leaving the rainforest, you enter the moorland zone. The terrain becomes more open, dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels. The hike is moderately strenuous, lasting 5-6 hours, covering about 5-7 kilometers. Shira Camp (3,620m) lies on a volcanic plateau, offering stunning views of the Western Breach and the summit. Use the afternoon to rest and adapt to the altitude.

Day 3
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

You trek across the expansive Shira Plateau and then descend slightly into the Great Barranco Valley. The route passes dramatic cliffs and volcanic formations. This 6-7 hour hike involves some ups and downs, but is scenic and rewarding. Barranco Camp (3,960m) lies beneath the imposing Barranco Wall, where you can relax and prepare for the challenging climb ahead.

Day 4
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Today begins with the famous Barranco Wall climb, a steep but doable scramble offering spectacular views. After conquering the wall, the trail descends into a valley before ascending again to Karanga Camp (4,035m). This 4-5 hour trek helps your body acclimatize with moderate exertion. Karanga Camp is smaller and quieter, providing a peaceful rest before the summit push.

Day 5
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
From Karanga, the trail joins the Mweka Route and ascends to Barafu Camp (4,640m), the last stop before the summit. The hike takes about 4-5 hours through rocky and barren alpine desert. Once at Barafu Camp, rest and hydrate, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit climb. Get plenty of rest for the challenging night ahead.

Summit Day and Descent
Summit Day and Descent
You begin your ascent around midnight, hiking in the cold and dark toward Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to catch the sunrise. This steep, demanding climb can take 6-8 hours. After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m). The trek ends with a final descent to Mweka Gate, where you receive your certificate and transfer back to your lodge.
