Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Begin at Marangu Gate (1,860m), trekking through lush rainforest filled with monkeys and exotic birds. The trail is scenic, with gentle inclines leading to Mandara Hut (2,700m). In the evening, explore Maundi Crater for panoramic views of northern Tanzania before dinner and an overnight stay.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Hike from rainforest into heath and moorland zones, where giant lobelias and volcanic scenery dominate. The steady climb offers incredible views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. After about 6–7 hours, arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m) for a warm meal, rest, and acclimatization.

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today’s trek crosses the alpine desert, a dry, barren landscape with sweeping views. The trail ascends gradually, passing the “Last Water Point” before reaching Kibo Hut (4,700m). Rest early, prepare gear, and fuel up with a hearty dinner in anticipation of the midnight summit attempt.

Kibo Hut to Summit, then Horombo Hut

Begin the final ascent around midnight, climbing steep switchbacks toward Gilman’s Point (5,681m). Continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), Africa’s highest point. Celebrate with breathtaking sunrise views before descending to Kibo for rest, then down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned overnight stay.

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
