Day 1

Marangu Gate (1870m) to Mandara Hut (2720m)

Marangu Gate (1870m) to Mandara Hut (2720m)

Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate, nestled among banana plantations and coffee farms. The trail plunges into dense rainforest, damp with mist. The air is alive with sound—blue monkeys chatter above, and the black-and-white colobus monkeys leap effortlessly from branch to branch, their tails streaming like silk. Bright turacos flash crimson wings through the trees, and duikers rustle in the undergrowth. By evening you reach Mandara Hut, where the night brings forest sounds: cicadas singing, maybe the call of a bushbaby.

Day 2

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3720m)

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3720m)

Leaving the forest, you emerge into heath and moorland. The trees thin, replaced by giant heather and tussock grasses. Sunbirds dart between blossoms, their feathers glittering emerald and ruby. Along rocky outcrops, you might glimpse a rock hyrax—a small mammal, surprisingly related to elephants, basking in the sun. The trail offers wide views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. You spend the night at Horombo Hut, where ravens circle overhead and the air grow crisp.

Day 3

Acclimatization at Horombo Hut

Acclimatization at Horombo Hut

This day is a gift for your body and spirit. You hike gently toward Mawenzi Ridge for acclimatization. The stark volcanic landscape contrasts with bursts of life: alpine chats flutter between rocks, while augur buzzards ride the thermals. Tiny alpine flowers bloom against all
odds, splashes of color in the rocky wilderness. Returning to Horombo Hut, you rest, surrounded by high-altitude silence broken only by the wind.

Day 4

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4700m)

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4700m)

The vegetation thins to sparse alpine desert. Hardy plants cling low to the ground, while the last lobelias and groundsels mark the end of life before the barren slopes. Here, life is quieter: ravens are often the only companions, their calls echoing in the thin air. By afternoon, you arrive at Kibo Hut, base camp for the summit push. Sleep is brief and restless because the great climb awaits.

Day 5

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Horombo Hut (3720m)

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Horombo Hut (3720m)

At midnight, under a sky blazing with stars, you begin the ascent. The trail climbs steadily through frozen scree. Occasionally, a silent owl may be seen against the moonlight. Step by step, you rise into dawn, until the first rays of sunlight strike the glaciers. At Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa, the world opens in all directions. You stand among ice and rock, where few living things survive.
After photos and celebration, you descend back to Horombo Hut, where the return to lower altitudes feels like returning to life itself.
