Momella Gate (1500m) toMiriakamba Hut (2000m)

The journey begins at Momella Gate, where rangers escort you through a landscape more like a safari than a trek. Giraffes stride elegantly across the savanna, buffalo graze in the tall grass, and warthogs scuttle away with tails upright like flags. The trail enters lush montane forest, thick with fig trees and mossy trunks. You might hear the call of a turaco or see the flash of a colobus monkey’s tail. By evening, you reach Miriakamba Hut, surrounded by bird calls and misty forest air.

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3570m)

The climb continues steeply through enchanted forest before opening into giant heather and moorland. Strange plants—giant lobelias and everlasting flowers—dot the trail. As you ascend,
views of Kilimanjaro appear, rising like a dream above the clouds. By afternoon, you arrive at Saddle Hut, nestled between Meru’s crater rim and the sharp spire of Little Meru. Before sunset, you can hike up Little Meru (3,820m), a perfect acclimatization trek with sweeping golden views over Arusha National Park.

Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak (4566m) to Miriakamba Hut (2500m)

Summit day begins in darkness, with headlamps cutting through the night. The trail climbs steeply along the crater rim, dramatic cliffs plunging into the ash cone below. As dawn breaks, the sky glows orange and Kilimanjaro rises in silhouette—a breathtaking sight. Finally, you stand on Socialist Peak, the second-highest summit in Tanzania. From here, the horizon stretches endlessly: Kilimanjaro to the east, the Rift Valley to the west, and the plains rolling far below.

Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

The final descent winds gently through forest alive with birdlife and the occasional rustle of antelope. Back at Momella Gate, you sign out, collect your certificate, and look up one last time at Meru’s graceful slopes.
