Arusha to Loliondo – Scenic Journey and Maasai Experience
After an early breakfast in Arusha, your driver-guide and local Maasai guide will pick you up and begin a scenic drive to Loliondo, a remote wilderness area rich in Maasai culture and stunning landscapes. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred “Mountain of God,” and the shimmering waters of Lake Natron.
After approximately seven hours, arrive at Osupuko Campsite and settle into your campsite. Later, enjoy a guided nature walk through the nearby forest, where you may spot black-and-white colobus monkeys swinging through the trees. On your return, visit a neighboring Maasai village and experience your first introduction to the traditions and hospitality of the Maasai people. Dinner and overnight at the campsite under the African stars.

Day 2
Sonjo Valley

Hiking Day: From Osupuko to Sonjo Valley
After breakfast, you will leave the Maasai village behind and begin your hike through woodlands and bush country toward the beautiful Sonjo Valley. Along the way, you will stop for lunch at a scenic spot with magnificent views over the valley, home to the Batemi (also known as the Sonjo) people.
Refreshed after lunch, the trail descends steeply into the valley. The route continues through small forests, open steppes, and several traditional settlements. The Batemi are highly skilled farmers, renowned for their sophisticated irrigation systems that support agriculture in this semi-arid region.
As you walk through cultivated fields, you will reach a welcoming village where your tents will be set up near the traditional round huts. The children and their families will greet you warmly, offering an authentic cultural experience and a memorable insight into local life.

Day 3

Hiking day to Digodigo - in the morning we continue on a flat path. The play of colours in the morning with the typical red earth of the valley is also very impressive today. The path leads through a rain-forest with a river. Here you can sport a varier of birds, butterflies and tropical plants. After lunch break and crossing a small river, we continue to the village of Digodigo. There is also the next tent camp, on the area of small clinic, the Digodigo Dispensary. In the afternoon you have the chance to visit the small hospital and take a walk through the village. There are also small shops and bars here, so a bit of "Village life" after the last few days in the bush. (Walking time 4 hours, distance 11km) overnight in tent.

Day 4
Digodigo to Masusu
Digodigo to Masusu
Hiking day from Digodigo to Masusu - Your hiking day starts early in the morning in the dry and warmer climates towards Lake Natron. You leave the hilly landscape behind and walk in a very flat landscape through the bushes and acacia forest. A multitude of colourful birds and herons hide here.
Again and again you will pass settlements, first the Batemi Village but soon you will enter the Maasai country again. On the way you will fetch children with their herds of goats, women on the way to the firewood or water and maybe with a little luck you will also meet the proud Maasai warriors, the youth of the people.
After lunch in the shade of an acacia tree, You will see lake Natron in the distance at the foot of the Oldoinyo Lengai Volcano for the first time. The holy Mountain of the Maasai is the goal of the hiking days. Today you stay at in small village called Masusu.

From Masusu to Lake Natron

Hiking Day: Masusu to Lake Natron
Early start from Masusu, descending into the Great Rift Valley with stunning views of Lake Natron and Ol Doinyo Lengai. Enjoy lunch near the lake shores, surrounded by dramatic volcanic scenery. The alkaline waters, heated by thermal springs, reach up to 60°C and are not suitable for bathing, but attract flamingos and pelicans, making it one of the world’s key breeding sites for lesser flamingos.
Continue by vehicle to Engaresero, where you relax at Lengai Camp with views of the volcano. Optional afternoon hike to Engaresero Waterfalls, a refreshing natural spring. Overnight at campsite.

Day 6

After breakfast at Africa Safari Lake Natron, enjoy your final morning in the heart of the African wilderness. Depending on your energy and departure schedule, you may take a short guided walk around the surrounding landscapes, where dramatic views of Ol Doinyo Lengai and Lake Natron provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching and photography. Keep an eye out for flamingos, raptors, and other species that thrive in this remarkable ecosystem.
Later, begin your scenic drive via Ketumbeine, experiencing the famously rugged roads known as the “African Massage.” Along the way, reflect on the unforgettable moments of your journey—walking with Maasai guides, sharing in traditional culture, exploring remote landscapes, and encountering unique wildlife. Upon arrival in Arusha, you will be transferred to your hotel or to the airport for your onward deperture home, bringing to a close a truly authentic adventure filled with culture, nature, wildlife, and lasting memories.
