South Africa Map
Karoo National Park lies in the Western Cape interior, bordering the town of Beaufort West. The entrance gate is 3km/1.9mi outside town alongside the N1 between Johannesburg and Cape Town. Both park and town are most often visited as a stopover on a self-drive trip between Johannesburg and Cape Town, which respectively lie 940km/584mi (11 hours’ drive*) northeast and 470km/292mi (6 hours’ drive*) southwest. A normal car can cover most roads inside the park.
Most visitors to South Africa fly into O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg or Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town. The Garden Route’s George Airport (GRJ) is only 240km/149mi south of Karoo NP, but few people fly there solely for that purpose.
*Driving times are only a rough indication. You should always consider the possibility of significant delays.
