Khutse Game Reserve can be visited year-round. Wildlife migrates through the park with the seasons. The best time for wildlife viewing in Khutse is during the wet months, from December to March, when animals gather around the pans. At this time, some roads might become off-limits as they can get very muddy. In April and May, the roads tend to be better, and there are still a lot of animals around.

Best Time December to March (Best wildlife viewing)
High Season July to October (The park never gets crowded)
Low Season November to June (Low-season rates may apply in the lodge)
Best Weather May to August (Less hot during the day with dry conditions)
Worst Weather January (It is hot, and it can be rainy)

April to October Dry Season

  • There is still water in the pans in April and May, so it’s a good time for wildlife viewing
  • The roads are in decent condition making it easier to drive in the park
  • It is cooler in the middle of the day from April to August
  • July to October is high season, and some lodges might charge high-season rates
  • It gets very dry and dusty

November to March Wet Season

  • The pans fill up, and animals gather to drink
  • Predators are attracted by the many baby animals
  • Migrants make this the best time for birding
  • It is very hot
  • The roads get muddy and sometimes become impassable
  • Afternoon thundershowers can interfere with activities
