Dark Sky Reserve with Sublime Desert Scenery

NamibRand is a private reserve mixing some of southern Namibia’s most sublime desertscapes with a range of mostly upmarket accommodation plus activities that support various conservation initiatives. It is a winning combination and, if your budget permits, a visit is highly recommended. Options for exploring include shorter walks, catered overnight hikes, hot air balloon trips and guided vehicle tours. No matter which you choose, you will be treated to almost constant panoramas of reddish-orange sands and broad gravel plains rimmed by distant mountains, with occasional sightings of springbok, oryx, black-backed jackals and both brown and spotted hyenas. And then there are all the small creatures that bring such life to the Namib desert, including beetles like the tap-tapping tok-tokkie, which gather water droplets from the fog into their mouths by standing on their heads.

Read more rest of southern Namibia, extra efforts are made at NamibRand (an International Dark Sky Reserve) to reduce light pollution, and so the stargazing here is superb. NamibRand is also known for its ‘fairy circles’, whose causes are still being researched. Visit NamibRand if you can, but view it as a full desert immersion rather than a typical wildlife experience.
