One excellent safari in African Savana
5/5

We are a group of friends who love to travel.
We visited Africa—specifically Kenya—for the first time.
While searching for a safari, I found an invaluable advisor: Laurine. Talking with her helped me understand how to best organize our trip, and she immediately earned my trust.
Everything went exactly as agreed, and at very good prices.
Our safari lasted four days.
We had an excellent guide, Vincent.
Vincent went out of his way to ensure our safari was rich in sightings and wildlife observation; he even navigated challenging, rugged paths to help us find more animals.
We saw many lions, giraffes, wildebeest, buffalo, a rhinoceros, impalas, and—remarkably—a leopard, which is quite a rare sight.
A visit to Lake Naivasha, home to hippos—which we added to our itinerary at the last minute—was particularly wonderful.
The accommodations were good and clean, with very polite and helpful staff.
I highly recommend Judeson Budget Safaris for your safari.

A very disappointing experience: poor organization, basic services, and a lack of transparency
2/5

This was my third safari in Africa, and unfortunately, it was by far one of my most disappointing experiences. I understand that a low-cost safari comes with certain compromises, but the quality of the organization and the overall service fell well below my expectations.

1. Poor payment arrangements and unnecessary delays

The day before our arrival, I informed the agency manager that I could either pay online by card or bring euros in cash. I also shared the market exchange rate, which was approximately USD 1.15 for EUR 1 at the time.

The following morning, our driver arrived late and took us to the wrong hotel to pick up the other travelers, causing us to lose around 30 minutes.

When we finally arrived at the agency, we were told that card payments were not possible because there was no payment terminal. The manager then offered an exchange rate of EUR 1 = USD 1.05, significantly below the market rate. I declined, and we had to find an ATM and pay additional withdrawal fees.

These issues could have been avoided with proper communication and preparation before our arrival.

2. An old vehicle in poor condition

The safari vehicle was very old and in poor condition, with some features not working properly. Given the long driving hours and sometimes difficult road conditions, I expected a more reliable vehicle. The quality of the vehicle negatively affected the overall experience.

3. Inefficient organization and unnecessary time spent on transfers

Three different groups staying at three different hotels were placed in the same vehicle. As a result, we had to make several detours to pick up and drop off other travelers.

We had to wake up around 4 a.m., yet a considerable amount of time was spent on hotel transfers rather than on the safari itself. A more efficient allocation of travelers to vehicles could have reduced these unnecessary delays.

The itinerary was broadly followed, but the logistics were inefficient. The experience felt more like a mass-market operation focused on minimizing costs than a well-organized safari designed to make the most of the time available.

4. Very basic accommodation and additional expenses

The first hotel was rather average, while the second was more satisfactory.

We were also informed that we were expected to tip the driver USD 10 per day. This had not been clearly communicated to us in advance, so I had not budgeted for this additional expense.

Another issue was the water allowance: we were limited to one litre per person per day. Considering the long days, the heat, and the physical demands of a safari, I found this allowance insufficient.

5. Lack of transparency regarding park entrance fees and nationality-based discounts

This was one of my main concerns.

When arranging payment, I informed the agency manager that I was Tunisian. She checked the applicable rates for the Maasai Mara National Reserve and confirmed that different pricing categories existed, including rates for East African residents or citizens and other international visitors.

Later, during our visit to Lake Nakuru National Park, known for its rhinos and flamingos, I received a call asking me to provide my passport. I was told that, as a Tunisian national, I was eligible for a USD 40 discount and that my nationality needed to be verified.

I had not been informed beforehand that such a discount might apply to me, nor had the agency clearly explained the applicable rates or whether my nationality had been taken into account when calculating the park fees.

I found this particularly disappointing. When an agency manages park entrance fees on behalf of its clients, it should clearly explain the applicable rates and verify eligibility for any relevant discounts before collecting payment.

6. Unnecessary complications with the airport transfer

When we asked to be dropped off at the airport, the driver initially said that it would not be possible or would be complicated. The transfer was eventually arranged, but once again, a relatively straightforward request became unnecessarily difficult.

Throughout the trip, we repeatedly encountered situations that could have been handled more efficiently with better planning and communication.

The agency offers a very low-cost safari, and the level of service reflects that positioning. However, my criticism is not simply about the lack of luxury. It concerns the inefficient organization, the time lost on transfers, the condition of the vehicle, the lack of advance information about additional expenses, and the lack of clarity regarding park fees and potential discounts.

I have experienced other safaris, so I understand that conditions can vary depending on the budget. I did not expect a luxury experience, but I did expect reliable transportation, clear information, reasonable logistics, and transparent pricing.

Unfortunately, the overall experience was disappointing. The itinerary was broadly respected, but the organization and service significantly reduced the quality of the trip.

My recommendation: Before booking, ask for written confirmation of the payment methods and exchange rate, the vehicle condition, the accommodation standards, the expected tips, the daily water allowance, the arrangements for collecting other travelers, and the park entrance fees applicable to your nationality.

Dear Maher,

First and foremost, please accept our sincere apologies for not meeting your expectations during your four-day safari with Judeson Budget Safaris. We are genuinely sorry that several aspects of the organization and service fell short of the experience you had hoped for. We understand that, regardless of the budget, every guest deserves reliable transportation, clear communication, transparent pricing, and well-coordinated arrangements. We appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed feedback, and we would like to address the concerns you have raised.

1. Payment Arrangements and Unnecessary Delays

Our booking policy for budget safaris requires a 10% deposit, with the outstanding balance payable in cash before the safari begins. This information was included in your tour package before the booking was confirmed. However, we acknowledge that your communication regarding the possibility of paying by card or bringing euros in cash which you communicated at night before your safari should have been handled more effectively. Unfortunately, this information was not properly recorded and acted upon, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this caused.

Regarding the exchange rate, we generally use rates offered by local foreign exchange bureaus, which may differ from the rates displayed online. Nevertheless, we understand that the applicable rate should have been communicated clearly in advance to allow you to plan your payment accordingly.

We also apologize for the delay and the inconvenience caused by the incorrect hotel pickup. As this was a group-joining safari, pickups were coordinated according to the locations of the participating guests rather than arranged individually. However, we recognize that we should have communicated the pickup arrangements more clearly and ensured that you were not left uncertain about the schedule.

2. Vehicle Condition

We sincerely apologize for the condition of the safari vehicle. Although the vehicle assigned was a KDC, we recognize that this does not excuse any shortcomings in its condition or the inconvenience you experienced. A reliable and properly maintained vehicle is essential, particularly when guests spend long hours travelling between destinations and navigating challenging roads.

We take this feedback seriously and will follow up with the tour guide and our operations team to review the condition of the vehicle and address any maintenance or service issues identified. We regret that the vehicle negatively affected your safari experience.

3. Organization and Time Spent on Transfers

We understand your concerns about the time spent collecting and dropping off guests at different hotels, particularly when the day begins early and every hour in the national parks is valuable.

For our group-joining safaris, we sometimes accommodate guests staying at different camps or lodges in the same general area. Some guests choose to upgrade their accommodation while still wishing to join a shared safari. We try to accommodate these preferences wherever possible, while coordinating pickups and drop-offs for everyone.

However, we recognize that this arrangement can result in additional transfers and lost time if not managed efficiently. Thank you for highlighting this challenge. We will review how we coordinate hotel pickups and group allocations to identify ways to minimize unnecessary detours and make better use of our guests' time in the parks. Your suggestion is valuable, and we appreciate the opportunity to improve our planning.

4. Accommodation, Tips, and Drinking Water

We appreciate your feedback regarding the accommodation. As part of our booking process, we provide accommodation photographs and website links in the PDF tour proposal so guests can review the available options before confirming their bookings. Guests who prefer different standards of accommodation can also request changes where available.

Nevertheless, we are sorry that the first accommodation did not meet your expectations, and we are pleased to hear that the second accommodation was more satisfactory. Thank you for acknowledging this.

Regarding the driver's tip, we would like to clarify that our tour package PDF includes a section outlining what is included in and excluded from the safari price. Under the exclusions, the suggested guide's tip of USD 10 per client, per day, is clearly indicated. This information is provided to help our guests plan their budgets and understand the potential additional expenses associated with their safari.

However, we would also like to emphasize that tipping is entirely discretionary and is never compulsory. We do not force our guests to tip or consider it an obligatory payment. It is a personal gesture of appreciation for the service received and should always depend on the guest's satisfaction and willingness to give, as well as their financial circumstances.

Nevertheless, we appreciate your feedback and recognize the importance of ensuring that all relevant information is clearly communicated and understood before the safari begins. We will continue working to make our pre-departure communication as clear as possible.

We also acknowledge your concern about the daily water allowance. We understand the importance of adequate drinking water during long safari days, especially in warm conditions. We will review how our water arrangements are communicated and managed to ensure that guests are adequately informed before travelling.

5. Park Entrance Fees and Nationality-Based Discounts

We sincerely apologize for the lack of timely communication and transparency regarding the park entrance fees and your eligibility for rates associated with your Tunisian nationality.

We understand that you had already raised the question of nationality-based discounts when settling your outstanding balance. We should have followed up on this and clearly explained the applicable rates, the documentation required, and how your nationality would be considered for the different parks before collecting payment.

Regarding the Maasai Mara, the rates applicable to visitors are determined by the relevant park or reserve rules and the visitor category. At the time of departure, the applicable category and supporting documentation were considered based on the information available to us. However, we acknowledge that the process and its implications should have been explained to you more clearly.

For Lake Nakuru National Park, the communication about your Tunisian passport and the potentially applicable rate was unfortunately delayed. During the week of your safari, the tour consultant directly handling your booking was unexpectedly away from the office for medical appointments. While this affected our internal communication, we recognize that it was our responsibility as an agency to ensure that the necessary information reached you in good time. We do not consider this an excuse for the oversight.

We fully understand why discovering the issue at the park entrance was frustrating, particularly given that you had previously asked about the possibility of receiving a discount. We are truly sorry for the confusion and the loss of confidence this may have caused.

Transparency is essential to our business, and we acknowledge that we did not communicate effectively in this instance. We will use your feedback to improve how we verify guest eligibility, communicate applicable park fees, and explain any discounts before collecting payment.

6. Airport Transfer Arrangements

Please accept our apologies for the unnecessary complications surrounding your airport drop-off. The transfer was part of the arrangements known to our driver, and it should have been handled smoothly without causing you additional concern.

We will follow up with the driver to understand why the transfer was initially presented as difficult to arrange and to ensure that such requests are handled more professionally in the future. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Our Final Apology and Commitment

We understand that your disappointment is not simply about the budget nature of the safari or the absence of luxury. It is about the organization, communication, vehicle condition, transparency, and efficient use of your time. These are reasonable expectations, and we acknowledge that we fell short in several of these areas.

We are grateful for your honest feedback, particularly as an experienced safari traveller who understands the realities of different travel budgets. Your observations give us an opportunity to review our procedures and identify areas where our service needs to improve.

At Judeson Budget Safaris, we value every guest and recognize that the quality of a safari depends not only on the destinations visited but also on how well the entire experience is managed. We sincerely regret that your four-day safari did not reflect the level of organization and service we strive to provide.

Thank you once again for sharing your experience. We take your comments seriously and will use them constructively as we work to improve our services for future guests.

Kind regards,

The Management Team.

Unforgettable..
5/5

Money well spent and an absolutely unforgettable experience. The views were incredible, we saw an amazing variety of animals, and every day brought something memorable.

The accommodation was basic, but perfectly reasonable for the budget. The food and drinking water were well taken care of, and overall the organisation was very good. There were one or two minor issues along the way, but they were negligible and did not take away from the experience.

A special mention to Kata, our driver, who was fantastic throughout the trip. He was extremely safe, patient, friendly and genuinely cared about making sure we had the best possible experience. He constantly went the extra mile to find the best spots, get us great wildlife sightings and make the most of every opportunity.
We also met some wonderful people along the way and made memories that we will carry for a lifetime.

I would definitely recommend Judeson Budget Safaris and would happily book with them again. 🦁🌍❤️

A Great Adventure with Room for Better Coordination
4/5

Overall, we had a very good experience with Judeson Budget Safaris, especially during the mountain tour itself. Our guide was very friendly, supportive and experienced, and it was clear that he had done the mountain many times before. The porters also did an excellent job, and we always had everything we needed during the trek. The food was very good, plentiful, healthy and varied, with a nice mix of traditional Kenyan dishes. It was not a high-end experience, but considering it was a budget tour, the value for money was absolutely fair and more than sufficient for us.

The main area for improvement would be communication and coordination between Judeson Budget Safaris and the guide. At times, the organisation felt a little adventurous, and some details were not fully communicated or did not completely match what had been described in the original offer. However, these issues did not significantly affect the mountain tour itself, which ran very well overall.

All in all, it was a memorable and enjoyable experience with a great team on the mountain, and with slightly better communication and organisation, the overall experience could be even better.

Good safari, but let down by organisation, communication and the condition of our vehicle
3/5

We did a 6-day safari with Judeson, visiting the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli. Overall, we saw some incredible wildlife and had some really memorable experiences, but a lack of communication, professionalism and organisation issues throughout the trip unfortunately affected our experience.

The start of the trip

We were told we would be picked up at around 6:40am and expected the long car journey to Masai Mara would begin from the moment we were collected. Instead, we were taken to an office where we waited for around an hour for Laurine, with very little to no communication about what was happening, why we were waiting or how long we would be waiting. We had woken up very early and were already tired, so spending the first hour of the trip sitting in an office, unsure of what was happening, was a disappointing start. We appreciate that delays can happen, but simply keeping us informed would have made a big difference. Hopefully this is something they can improve on.

Organisation and communication

Unfortunately, the lack of communication was a recurring theme throughout the trip. On Day 3, we were told we would be picked up at 7am to head towards Lake Nakuru. However, we ended up waiting around an hour for three other couples to complete the Maasai cultural tour before we could leave. We then waited for another 30 minutes even after they had all arrived, again without being told why. This was particularly frustrating because we had already done the cultural tour ourselves on the first day, after arriving at our camp near the Masai Mara, so nobody had to wait for us.

The extra waiting time could have been used to sleep, start the journey earlier, or potentially have more time at our next destination. Alternatively, we could have done the cultural tour with the rest of the group on Day 3.

Because of the 2 hour delay in the morning of Day 3, we only stayed in Lake Nakuru for about 2 hours. We felt this could have been handled much better, particularly if we had simply been told in advance that we would be waiting for another couple.

Another instance was that at the end of the trip, our driver randomly stopped at a gas station and told us to get out of the car for an Uber to take us home in Nairobi. This type of last minute and hectic communication was consistent throughout the trip.

Lack of communication and organisation was an issue during longer drives too. We were rarely told beforehand how long the journeys would take, how many stops we would make in order to stretch our legs or take toilet breaks, or when we would be stopping. Having a clearer itinerary and better communication about timings would have made the trip feel much more organised.

The safari vehicle

The vehicle was probably our biggest concern. The jeep was incredibly old and, on one occasion, was expelling smoke. We expected a mini fridge in the jeep as stated in our quote document, but our vehicle didn't have one. We experienced many tyre changes during the trip and the jeep even broke down at one point due to a broken spring. Having looked at other vehicles on game drives, this car looked like the oldest and was at points the slowest.

More seriously, on one occasion the vehicle broke down completely and we had to hitch a ride with another safari vehicle back to the accommodation. Interestingly, this gave us a very clear comparison between the two vehicles. The temporary replacement vehicle was noticeably newer, more robust and much better equipped. It was less dusty, had air conditioning and even had a fridge. The contrast made us realise just how basic and uncomfortable our vehicle had been.

Our usual vehicle also wasn't properly sealed. Even with the windows closed, we could visibly see dust coming into the vehicle through large holes and gaps itself. Given how much time you spend driving on dusty roads during a safari, this became quite uncomfortable, and at times we felt unsafe. The temporary replacement vehicle that took us back to the accommodation had no such issues.

All this unfortunately meant less time looking for animals, and arriving late to national parks due to frequent stops at car mechanic shops during the journey.

We understand that safari vehicles are used extensively on rough terrain and that they won't necessarily be new, particularly on a budget safari. However, we expected the vehicle to be in a reasonable and safe condition for a six-day trip.

Lake Naivasha and additional costs

We also weren't aware that the Lake Naivasha boat ride did not include the walk on Crescent Island. This was an additional $33 per person. Every other person on our tour had this booked prior, and it was only us that were not informed of this addition. We don't have an issue with optional activities costing extra, but it would have been much better to know this beforehand. More transparency about what is and isn't included in the itinerary, and which activities have additional costs, would have helped us budget and make informed decisions.

Food

The food was fairly basic, which is understandable given that this was a budget safari. Dinner at the camps/hotels was generally okay, and packed lunches were provided for the days when we were out on game drives.

That said, the packed lunches were often very disappointing. On one day, for example, we were given three pieces of white bread with butter, along with two boiled eggs. It wasn't particularly enjoyable, especially when you're spending a full day travelling and on safari. This isn't necessarily Judeson's fault, as the food is provided by the camps/hotels, but it's worth mentioning for transparency so that future travellers know what to expect.

Tour guides and lack of organisation

We had the safari with other couples who were spanish speakers. They were therefore given a spanish tour guide, who would mainly speak in spanish rather than English. We thought it would be okay as the driver spoke English, however he rarely spoke to us during game drives as he was concentrating on the road and he relied entirely on the Spanish tour guide. This meant we had to rely on the spanish couples to translate and tell us what each of the animals were at many points during the game drives. This is poor organisation on Judesons part as we would have preferred to have had an English guide.

Maasai cultural tour

We also did a Maasai cultural tour, which was interesting and gave us the opportunity to learn more about the local community and culture. However, we found the experience uncomfortable in parts. The person conducting the tour was extremely pushy about buying souvenirs, repeatedly telling us that purchases exceeding $40 would help support local schools. At one point, we felt surrounded by people encouraging us to buy things, which became quite uncomfortable and made us feel pressured. We understand that buying souvenirs can be an important source of income for local communities, and we were happy to look around and support local sellers. However, we would have preferred to make our own decision about whether and what to buy, without feeling pressured. This wasn't something we would necessarily attribute to Jusedson themselves, but we think it is worth mentioning for future travellers. We learnt a lot from the cultural tour and appreciated the opportunity to experience it, but the sales aspect could have been handled in a much less forceful way.

The positives

Despite these issues, there were definitely some highlights. Seeing the wildlife in the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli was an amazing experience, and we had some unforgettable moments throughout the six days. The safari itself gave us the opportunity to visit some incredible places and see animals in their natural environment, which is ultimately what we came for.

We also appreciated the opportunity to experience the Maasai cultural tour and learn more about the local community, despite the uncomfortable pressure to purchase souvenirs.

Overall

We had some genuinely amazing experiences on the safari, but the trip was let down by organisation, communication and the condition of the vehicle.

For a budget safari, we understand that there will be compromises, and we weren't expecting luxury. However, basic communication about timings, delays, additional costs and the day's itinerary would have significantly improved our experience. We also think the vehicle should be properly maintained and sealed, particularly when guests are spending so many hours travelling in it.

We highly recommend Judeson Budget Safaris for an incredible, well‑organised East‑African safari led
5/5

A huge thank‑you to Judeson Budget Safaris for crafting a nearly‑perfect, lifelong‑memorable East‑African safari for us.

Every detail of our journey was handled with thoughtful care and professionalism. We were assigned a dedicated, highly‑qualified driver‑guide with rich field experience. He possessed deep knowledge of grassland terrain and wildlife behaviour, and knew all the best viewing spots inside the parks like the back of his hand. He could always anticipate animal movements in advance, getting us into prime positions to watch wildlife calmly and at close range.

What impressed us most was his excellent physical stamina. Whether setting off early in the morning for game‑viewing, driving long distances across the grassland in the afternoon, or waiting patiently for wildlife late into the evening, he stayed energetic and attentive throughout. His steady, skilled driving guaranteed our safety and made every wildlife‑watching session highly rewarding.

During this safari, we were fortunate enough to spot the Big Five, together with zebras, giraffes and many other rare wild animals. The spectacular grassland scenery made our safari experience truly unforgettable.

The whole itinerary was well‑designed with a wonderfully relaxed pace. Service was reliable and consistent, with great attention paid to every small detail. This has been a fulfilling, restorative African adventure that we will cherish for many years. We whole‑heartedly recommend Judeson Budget Safaris as a trustworthy, high‑quality local ground operator for anyone planning a safari holiday in Kenya.
