Delivered as ordered...

...I spent quite a while pondering how to translate the English phrase "you get what you pay for" into German. We booked the 8-day safari tour, including the Maasai Mara and Amboseli National Park, for just under $1,500 per person. That's pretty much the bare minimum. Comparable offers often cost two or three times as much. Accordingly, our expectations weren't particularly high.

First realization: the parks, animals, and impressions are the same—regardless of whether you pay $1,500, $3,000, or $6,000. Second realization: the mode of transportation, apart from flying or hot air balloon safaris, is also the same. In other words, you spend a really (too?) long time sitting or standing in the car (and the cars you're sitting or standing in are the same, too).

So, that leaves the accommodations, the food, and the guide. First, regarding the first two: yes, they were rather basic, but always somewhere between acceptable and good – you get what you pay for!

Our guide, James Mwaura, on the other hand, proved to be a real stroke of luck: competent, friendly, and relaxed. With him, we felt we were in excellent hands, both in terms of driving (which is quite relevant given the local traffic conditions) and professionally and personally.

Here are a few more things we wish we had known beforehand:

* The 8-day tour includes 3 days in the Maasai Mara. Although this park is huge and fascinating, 2 days are perfectly sufficient.

* Super Eagles occasionally reshuffles the groups during the individual stages to accommodate the different tour options (e.g., 7 vs. 8-day tour). This isn't necessarily a disadvantage, but it can potentially detract from the experience. We therefore skipped the third day in the Maasai Mara to stay with our original group (and our guide, James).

* Super Eagles occasionally reshuffles the groups during the individual stages to accommodate the different itineraries (e.g., 7 vs. 8-day tour). * Before our tour, we did a half-day tour in Nairobi National Park, which was great. However, we were able to see four of the "Big Five" there, which somewhat diminished the "wow factor" of the Maasai Mara. In hindsight, we could have easily skipped that.

In conclusion: a fantastic safari tour, lasting impressions, a great guide (and a great group). And as for accommodation and food: delivered exactly as expected.

Amazing Experience
5/5

Our guide Benson was the key for our amazing experience, his cheerful personality, his excellent driving skills, his knowledge of the parks and wildlife made our five days Safari a great memory. Benson’s ability to predict the animals’ next move enabled us to arrive at the perfect spot for a closer look at the animals, we were amazed and impressed, and how lucky we were, best holiday ever.
We will definitely come back.
