Overview – Sioma Ngwezi NP
This very remote park is rarely visited and has no facilities at all. It is in a large Game Management Area (GMA) bordering Angola and the Zambezi Region in Namibia. Animals move freely in the area and elephants migrate between the countries. Poaching is a big problem in the region and wildlife densities are low.
Pros & Cons
- Off-the-beaten-track destination
- Close to Victoria Falls and Livingstone
- Nearby attractions include Siomo Falls and the Zambezi River
- Several lodges nearby, on the Zambezi, are set-up for fishing
- Overnight camping trips offered by nearby Mutemwa Lodge
- Not much wildlife
- No permanent water makes animals move out in the Dry season
- Only one simple bushcamp in the park
Not much is known about the wildlife in the park. Animals migrate freely between the park and wilderness areas in neighboring countries. Elephant numbers are good, and giraffe and zebra might be seen. There is a variety of antelope, including puku, impala and kudu. Less common antelopes are sable and roan. The main predators are lion, leopard and spotted hyena but they are rarely encountered. Cheetah and wild dog might be present as well.
The terrain is flat and forested with tracts of miombo and acacia woodland. There are areas of magnificent teak forest as well. Nearby is the mighty Zambezi River and the beautiful Sioma Falls.

Best Time to Visit
Sioma Ngwezi has no permanent water sources and animals move out in the Dry season. The park is best visited just after the Wet season, between May and June, when there is still some water around. From December to April, the roads might become difficult to navigate.
There is a good road from Livingstone to the park, but tracks in the park aren’t great, and a sturdy 4x4 is essential. There is no campsite in the park, and you need to be fully self-sufficient. The best option would be to drive to Mutemwa Lodge at the Zambezi River and book a two-night camping trip in the park with them.
