Is Kasane a good starting point for going on safari?
“Kasane is an excellent starting point for any safari. Among the many things going for it, Kasane is close to Victoria Falls, it’s right alongside Chobe Riverfront, and it has good air connections to the rest of Botswana and Johannesburg. Above all, Kasane is the gateway to Chobe National Park. The wildlife-rich Chobe Riverfront section of the park is just a few kilometers from Kasane. If that’s the only part of the park you visit, you will still have a wonderful safari. But from Chobe Riverfront, you can easily drive on to Savuti and even beyond to Khwai Concession, Moremi Game Reserve and the Okavango Delta. It’s also possible to visit Chobe Riverfront, return to Kasane, and then fly to Savuti or beyond to the Delta. You can also combine Chobe with an excursion to and/or from Victoria Falls.”
1Which animals will I see on safaris from Kasane?
“Assuming that you visit Chobe Riverfront, you can expect to see lots of elephants (Chobe is famous for its elephants), as well as many other species, such as crocodile, hippo, giraffe, buffalo, warthog and possibly lion. If your safari takes you into the Savuti region, you might also see cheetah, leopard and African wild dog, which are among the real prizes of Savuti, along with more lions and elephants. Of course, the farther you travel – into the Okavango Delta, for example – the more you’re likely to see, both in terms of different species (red lechwe is one of the many antelope species you can see in the Delta) and the number of each species.”
2Is it possible to visit the Okavango Delta from Kasane?
“Yes, the Okavango Delta definitely lies within the orbit of Kasane. If you’re traveling by road, it will take a couple of days to drive from Kasane to the Okavango Delta, but you’ll have the pleasure of driving through Chobe NP to get there, making for a wonderful overall safari. It’s also possible to fly from Kasane directly into the Okavango Delta. While most safaris into the Delta begin in Maun, there are certainly flights from Kasane into the remote camps and concessions of the Delta. Many of these flights stop at airstrips of Chobe NP or Linyanti Concession along the way, allowing you to combine Chobe and the Delta in one trip.”
3Can I combine a trip from Kasane with Victoria Falls?
“Yes, there are lots of tours and packages that combine a safari from Kasane (most often a Chobe safari) with a visit to Victoria Falls. In fact, it’s one of the most popular trips to take in this part of Africa. Victoria Falls is only around 76km/47mi from Kasane. It should only take a couple of hours by road, including the time spent crossing the Zimbabwean or Zambian border with Botswana. Depending on how many days you have for your safari, you could, for example, enjoy a week-long tour in which you spend a couple of days in Victoria Falls, two days in Chobe and three in the Delta, all beginning in Kasane.”
4What is the best time of year for a safari from Kasane?
“The best weather in the Chobe Riverfront area is during the Dry season from April to October, when you can expect mild temperatures, clear skies and cool evenings. For wildlife viewing, the best months are August to October (although October can be very hot). That’s because as the Dry season progresses, water sources dry out across Chobe and both predator and prey species are drawn to the riverbank in their endless search for water. The best months for exploring farther afield (beyond the Riverfront to Savuti and the Delta) are similarly in the Dry season. The main exception is for birders. From November to April, migratory species (birds that undertake a seasonal migration every year) from Europe and North Africa are present across northern Botswana.”
5Is there anything to see in Kasane itself?
“Kasane doesn’t have much to offer in terms of attractions. It’s best known as a place to find comfortable accommodations, a handful of places to eat, and supplies in the city’s well-stocked supermarkets and petrol stations. The main attraction is the chance to take a boat trip out on the Chobe River. This can either be a sunset cruise where you can enjoy the views of Namibia on the far bank, or a boat safari that goes all the way to the Chobe Riverfront so that you can see the animals from out on the river.”
