Lalibela is one of Ethiopia’s most remarkable and spiritually significant historical sites. Located in the northern part of the country, Lalibela is famous for its rock-hewn churches—a series of 11 medieval churches carved directly out of solid volcanic rock. These structures were built in the 12th and 13th centuries during the reign of King Lalibela, who aimed to create a "New Jerusalem" for Ethiopian Christians after Muslim conquests made pilgrimages to Jerusalem difficult.
