This park has recently reopened after a long period under the control of the Ministry of Defense. Poaching has been rife, and it will take some time for wildlife numbers to re-establish themselves. The location on the Kafue Flats makes it a birders hotspot, and there are hundreds of endemic Kafue lechwe on the floodplains. The park is undeveloped and only limited, self-catering chalets are available.

Wildlife

There isn't a lot of wildlife in the park. The main attraction is the birdlife and the hundreds of Kafue lechwe that roam along the floodplains. A causeway facilitates driving onto the flats and seeing the lechwe up close. Also of interest is the Southern African python, which can sometimes be found on the flats. Small numbers of zebra and buffalo can also be encountered.

Scenery

The main feature in the park is the Kafue Flats. The floodplains are fringed with acacia woodland.

Weather & Climate

The weather and climate of Blue Lagoon is comparable to that of Zambia in general. More info:

Best Time to Visit

Blue Lagoon is best visited in the Wet season, from November to April. At this time, the 5km/3mi causeway will reach well onto the water, and the sight of the birds and lechwe is spectacular from this vantage point. Blue Lagoon is mainly a birding destination, and November to April is the best time for birding, as migrants are present and many birds are in breeding plumage.

Getting There

Visitors to the park should come with their own 4x4. The park is located 120km/74mi from Lusaka on a reasonable road.

Bird-rich park, close to Zambia’s capital

Blue Lagoon National Park is in many ways the poor relation of its far larger neighbour Kafue, to the west, and, Lochinvar, which lies to the south, on the opposite side of the Kafue River. In my opinion, the main reason to consider coming...
