Day 4
Shira Camp-Lava Tower-Baranco Camp
Shira Camp-Lava Tower-Baranco Camp
Today is one of the most important acclimatization days on the climb. After breakfast, you’ll hike east across the Shira Plateau before gradually ascending toward Lava Tower (4,630m), a striking volcanic formation. Lunch is taken near Lava Tower, giving your body valuable time to adjust to the higher altitude. From there, the trail descends into the Barranco Valley, a dramatic landscape with towering cliffs and giant Senecio plants. Although you end the day at a similar elevation to the previous night (3,960m), the “climb high, sleep low” approach greatly improves acclimatization. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

From there, the trail undulates through ridges and valleys in the alpine desert zone, with expansive vistas of Kibo and the southern glaciers. The trek is shorter today, designed to further aid acclimatization. You’ll arrive at Karanga Camp (4,035m) by early afternoon, leaving time to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the push to higher elevations. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

This is a shorter but important day, bringing you to Barafu Camp (4,640m), the base camp for your summit attempt. From here, you’ll enjoy clear views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arriving by early afternoon allows time to rest, have an early dinner, and prepare your gear for the night ahead. You’ll head to bed early, as the summit push begins just before midnight. Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp.

Day 7

Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak- Mweka Camp
Summit day begins in the dark, with a midnight wake-up call for hot tea and light snacks before setting out with headlamps. The trail is steep and demanding, climbing over loose scree toward Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim.
