Along the way, enjoy game drives across sweeping savannahs, where you may spot herds of wildebeest, zebra, and buffalo, often shadowed by predators such as lions and cheetahs.

From December to March, Ndutu becomes a prime location to witness the annual migration and the remarkable calving season, when thousands of wildebeest give birth. This attracts a high concentration of predators, including hyenas, jackals, and big cats, creating the chance to observe dramatic wildlife interactions.

Ndutu

After a hearty breakfast, set out for a full-day game drive in the Ndutu region. This area offers a mix of habitats—swamps, woodlands, and open savannah—each supporting a wide variety of wildlife. With a bit of luck, you’ll witness vast herds of wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes, sometimes stretching as far as the eye can see. The low, haunting calls of the wildebeest add to the atmosphere of this remarkable landscape.

During a brief but dramatic period, typically in February, thousands of female wildebeests give birth in a synchronized event that sees over half a million calves born on the open plains. With minimal cover in the short grass, predators such as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and leopards are never far behind. Newborn calves are on their feet within minutes and can usually keep up with the herd within a few days—an incredible feat of survival.

After a full day of exploration and wildlife encounters, return to your tented camp for dinner and a well-earned overnight stay.

Hidden within the steep volcanic walls is a diverse ecosystem featuring open savannah, patches of acacia forest, and sparkling lakes and wetlands. Formed 2 to 3 million years ago by the collapse of a massive volcano, the crater is now home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife.

Descending into the crater is a scenic and memorable experience. On the crater floor, you’ll find large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle, along with over 500 species of birds. This area also offers one of the best chances to see the endangered black rhino in the wild.
