Sossusvlei - Swakopmund
A fairly long but interesting drive today. You skirt around the main Namib Dune Sea to reach the coast. En route you pass petrified dunes, the Tropic of Capricorn (not looking very tropical) and negotiate your way through the Gaub & Kuiseb Canyons before you reach the coastal plains that roll all the way down to the ocean.
Once clear of the canyons you travel across endless desert plains only interrupted by the odd rocky outcrop. You can get a bit sleepy on this stretch of road, be sure to stop for regular breaks. You'll notice a drop in the temperature as you get closer to the coast. The cold Benguela Current modifies the coastal temperatures which are milder year round. This makes the coastal towns a very popular destination for locals during the hot summer months. Inland in summer it can be 35-40 degrees while the coast is a balmy 18-22.
